I still remember the day when getting a TNG book cover. Probably as a gifty for being in the AV Club*. Wish I kept it, but I was also wondering why they'd hand out promotionals for tv shows during school... and wondering why these freebies came out before the premiere of the tv or movie or whatever took place, since what if it were to flop...
The new Enterprise definitely was spacious. Wasn't keen on the ship's design at first, but it grew on me - a lot. Fathoming how the phaser arrays would work - each strip has x number of emitters. Each emitter has a 250 degree angle range, so that the beam wouldn't slice into the hull. Calling which strip (aft, forward, ventral, port, starboard, wherever) then using directional targeters like how you camera can autofocus on a subject, I wish I paid more attention to calculus that day... maybe Harry will one day. Loved how his dad was named Bernard... probably not for Bertrand Russell, but for Bernard Riemann, I'd hope. Any Bernie anywhere who could calculate "two plus two" in his head is good enough, probably...
TBF, the new console panels also reminded me of membrane keyboards, even if the fictional idea behind them (reprogrammable touch screens) was a futuristic idea that can be done today to an extent. Still, tapping on a nonresponsive panel probably doesn't do much good; a tactile keyboard with nice springy feel has no pragmatic substitute. At least until a neural interface is designed, but I don't have the schematics or Cytherians** on hand right now, so leave a message after the tone and I'll get back to you as soon as I can... ^beep^ (there's another bit of outdated fun...)
* yup, I'm a nerd and a cheap one too!
** come to think of it, for putting so many at risk, they were a real head case...
