Playmates Toys

Would be cool if they don't just do the same old line up of Kirk, Spock, Khan, Picard, Data, Borg etc.

Exo-6 took the right approach and did the opposite, building to these characters instead of starting. They got through all of Voyager before Picard was even mentioned, for example.

(The scale and price point, however, definitely keeps these extremely niche)

I’m curious what they mean by “roles in outfits never before produced”.

For example, between DST and Playmates, I think every variation of Kirk, Spock, Data and Picard have been done…aside from “Picard” versions. And I highly doubt they won’t do those characters eventually. Especially Kirk and Spock.

The Chekhov spacesuit thing from ST:II was mentioned, so maybe it's more like that? I could imagine a neutral face pose and screaming pose with eel.

It's just a guess, but that would be interesting

Garak in any other outfit than the one they did last time.
Gul Dukat as Bajoran.
Jadzia in her purple dress.
Jadzia in Trill gown.
Jadzia in swimsuit.
Jadzia in a towel.
;)

Kirk as Kirok.
Riker in Anbo-jyutsu training gear.
Tasha in training gear.
Mobster Kirk and Spock.
Workout clothes Kirk.
Sisko in Niners uniform.

Playmates did Gangster Kirk and Spock. But only Kirk in the two different scales. Spock was only in the 9 inch scale. They even did depression era Kirk and Spock from “City on the Edge….”

Maybe Kirk in the vest from Generations, the leather/suede Captains jacket or away team uniform from Final Frontier. Or even better in his “climb a mountain” t-shirt and jeans from Final Frontier. You could even do campfire Spock and Bones to go along.

I really want a Janeway in that scale, I don't mind what she wears.

Also Kruge. The prototype from Diamond looked amazing

I’d like to have all the Voyager characters in that scale. I’ve been putting together the main crews from the DST line (when I can find them cheap on eBay) and not having any one from Voyager looks off.

Interesting. Nacelle is a company I've been hearing about on YouTube. They've acquired the licenses of some defunct toy lines from the '80s and '90s and have relaunched a few of them as part of a shared "Nacelleverse," with plans for more in the future.

When I hear1/12th scale, i can't help but think of Hasbro's Star Wars Black Series, even though Nacelle will probably indeed be inspired by DST. The sticking point, however, will be the pricing. From the stuff they've released so far, Nacelle figures definitely aren't for people on a budget, IMO.

Collecting is not a budget activity. It's definitely a luxury item now

Playmates failed with a mass market approach, but Exo-6 and Super7 seem to be doing ok in the more premium space.

But I guess this means Super7's Ultimates are dead, given that they are the same scale?

Depends on the license. If Hiya goes forward they also have 1/12 scale Kelvin figures as well as the 1/18.

Playmates problem this go round was trying to get into brick and mortar places like Target and WalMart. These days Trek is too niche to compete with Ninja Turtles, GI Joe, etc… and not trying to make the new offerings match up with the original line.

I’m still hopeful for the Hiya line if they ever actually get released.

I also think they should have simply made new characters in the exact 90s retro style.

Instead they made slightly different versions that don't look good on the shelf with the old ones, and have very soft face sculpts.
I'd have absolutely picked up some retro styled characters. I wouldn't have been able to stop myself.

I didn’t have a problem with the character selections except for Riker and Khan.

Kirk, Spock, Data and Picard are arguably the 4 most well known characters in the franchise. Plus we never got a Monster Maroon Spock and the MM Kirk was the crappy one from Generations with no articulation. Picard and Data were active characters from Picard S1 and of course Burnham and Saru. But it is a tough balance between collectors who already may have the original characters and trying to attract new collectors.

I’d have pulled Riker and Khan and gone with Mariner/Boimler, Pike/Una or mix it up and go Pike/Seven of Nine. We were already supposed to be getting Janeway in the Prodigy line. And yeah, done them all in the retro more cartoony style.
