Morgan Woodward In Season 3?

Spock's Barber

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I thought Morgan Woodward was an excellent guest star in S1 ‘Dagger of the Mind’ and S2 ‘Omega Glory’. He seemed to steal the show in both episodes.

I missed seeing him in S3. A new producer, limited budget for guest stars and other factors seemed to have excluded him from being cast.

However, that doesn’t stop this thread from speculating : Which S3 character could he have easily substituted for.

I’ll start off. I liked Steve Ihnat as Lord Garth, but I would have loved to see Woodward match wits with Kirk on Elba II.

Liam Sullivan's performance was of subdued slimy menace, which I think - if anybody - Morgan Woodward could have improved upon. Plus, noting that the fight scene in 'Omega' didn't have stunt doubles between them, he and Shatner would have been easy naturals for the Parmen/Kirk combat at the end as well.

Morgan probably would have elevated - here it comes - the Gorgon in "And the Children Shall Lead", especially when increasing in intensity as the episode continued. Culminating with "DEATH TO YOU ALL!", never mind "if you need me, call", Morgan's range in both his s1 and s2 stories easily shows aplomb and handling that's well above average, and Trek already had some talent in it in the first place. Morgan could easily play numerous characters and all you're seeing is the character. That's how awesome he was. (Note also Barbara Babcock as Mea 3 and Philana as visibly different roles, plus the wonderfulness of Cmdr Loskene in "The Tholian Web", and numerous computer voices in episodes. Oh very well, you talked me into it despite not having done so, there's also Trelane's mommy from "The Squire of Gothos". Point is, she's iconic yet distinctly unique in all her entries into the lore.)

Poor Melvin Belli just fell flat on his face as The Gorgon. He only got the gig because Fred Freiberger was a friend of his. I’m not sure if he had any more acting credits before or after TOS.

Actually my first thought when creating this thread was : Morgan Woodward as The Gorgon. That would work! However, I went with him as Lord Garth. Seeing Morgan in Klingon makeup as Kang would also have been interesting, too.

Could have been a Earp in "Spectre of the Gun"

…or Doc Holliday.

About that same time (the end of 1969) he was in the Rolling Stones film "Gimme Shelter" playing himself (a sleezy lawyer). I think that was his last acting gig.

He would've made an awesome Klingon!

He was excellent in Dagger of The Mind. I have his mental anguish scene pretty much memorized. He was totally unforgettable in that episode.

I also would have loved to see him as a Klingon.

No, but I'll admit it still would have been fun to see what kind of delivery Woodward chose to give in place of Ansara's flatly-authoritative "This is Kang. [pause] Cease hostilities." line.
His take on any of the three “main” Klingons would not be what we got. Might be an improvement on “Bob” though.
