The Maple Leaf Lounge

I would dearly love to go back to Ottawa. I’m just hoping the construction at Parliament Hill will be done sometime in the current millennium. :sigh:

Replacing old names with new, corporate names is just disgusting.

However, if the people protest enough, sometimes it doesn't happen. The oldest mall in our city (just over 50 years old, now) was sold to some outfit that promptly decided to change its name and put some weird exterior decoration on the outside.

The people spoke up and said NO! This mall has ALWAYS been Parkland Mall, and if you call it something different, nobody will use the new name and some people will stop shopping here.

Even now, when someone says they're going to "the mall" it's assumed they mean Parkland, even though we have another mall at the other end of town, plus numerous strip malls and big box store areas.

The new owners backed down, restoring the name and removing those stupid-looking extraneous decorations.

Some people look at me strangely when I use old names for places with new names. I just tell them, "Look, I was born here, I've lived here all my life, and I'm old enough to get to call things by the names I knew. So the hotel on the south side will always be the Capri for me (our high school graduation was held there and it's where I once earned $50 and a pile of sandwiches for being part of a focus group giving feedback about the then-premier, Ed Stelmach).

Part of the park system will always be Salamander Swamp to me, because that's what the neighborhood kids called it in the mid-1970s when it was a swamp (in Grade 6 we were taught orienteering and were dropped off in the swamp with a compass and told to find our way back to the school; the water was knee-deep and the mosquitoes were vicious!).

And the subdivision now known as Riverside Meadows can have a fancy name, but it hasn't fixed the crime situation there (about a week or two before I moved into a run-down apartment there, a woman killed her husband/boyfriend in the next block and the cops were constantly coming to my building because the people upstairs were always fighting; I was never so glad to get out of a neighborhood!). So I tell people that I've damn well earned the right to keep calling it Lower Fairview - the name change didn't improve anything.

Yeah, with you there. It lacks creativity and in the end lacks identity as the name doesn't tell you much about where these things are. Not to mention, they're far less memorable. Though, I think there's one exception to this, and it's perhaps Wrigley Field, which is likely because it was one of the first to be named after a company, and it's still memorable. But the minute all of them started to become named after their sponsors, I felt sad about them. And then there's always a risk that a sponsor will pull out, necessitating a rebrand and renaming of the place, as what happened in Ottawa with their stadium, which went from Palladium to Corel Centre to Scotia Bank Centre to Canadian Tire Centre.

What actually goes on there? If it's named for Canadian Tire, I'd expect some activity that includes tires.

Knowing you, you just had to do it, didn't you? Did you do it with a cup of Tim Hortons?

I swear to you, on scout's honor, I did not.

Hell, I'm lucky I received admission to the Maple Leaf Lounge in the first place. I wasn't even flying Air Canada- my reservation was on United! Apparently since I was flying first class, that's what got me in.

Seriously. You guys know me, you know I would not yank your chain like that. But I am very appreciative of what I was able to get. Pearson's always treated me well.

I mean, come on. These are two separate airlines we're talking about here. Air Canada and United. I am DAMN lucky I got the reciprocal benefits. I an extremely grateful for this, let me be absolutely clear on that. And the Air Canada lounge was VERY nice. If I ever appeared to be ungrateful, let me disabuse you of that notion RIGHT off the bat. I enjoyed every minute of what I was able to spend in that lounge and I am absolutely, with every fiber of my being, GRATEFUL that I was able to gain access to it.

I just thought the wordplay was funny. I often post in a thread called the Maple Leaf Lounge...and here I am, in a place called the Maple Leaf Lounge....I mean...guys...it's...kind of... funny...isn't...it...:D

Like I said. TOTAL coincidence. Wordplay, nothing more. I am NOT. as my British brother-in-law might say, "taking the mickey". :D

Since I'm about to take a vacation in Toronto, I might actually be able to watch L&O:TOR! If it's on in my hotel room, that is.

Demolishing park infrastructure for no good reason (ie. it wasn't structurally unsafe or there wasn't an environmental problem in the vicinity) makes me wonder who that land is eventually going to be sold to, and how Ford intends to benefit politically and financially. Here in Alberta, following the money and the question of who benefits leads to O,G, and M (oil, gas, and mining).
I live really far away from southern Ontario, and even I know a few things about Greenbelt development...and the Ottawa train...and the OSC...oh and Alberta's OG&M... (Of course it's a just "brief pause" for the Smith gov't to review regulatory policy on renewables...mmhmmm...)

Rarely do those of us in BC and Quebec get to look at Alberta and Ontario and think, “oh thank goodness, we’re the normal ones this year!” so I'm not complaining too seriously.
I tap-danced around it very carefully, with the "some people believe this, and the astronomers have observed that." Above all, I did my best to be neutral about it. It may seem like a copout, but people need to understand that this woman had the say over whether or not I'd be allowed to continue in the B.Ed. program.
So not a cop-out. I think it stands up to the test of time really well. Explain the curriculum, mention when there are differing points of view, and encourage kids to do their own research. Bravo!

Oh and about the Jeopardy thing. I'm not proud of this but sitting here at home, I know it’s obviously the sun. Hell, I watch Star Trek where every other week an exploding star gives our heros something to do! I know this. But in a studio, with the lights, and the crew, and the pressure’s on, I’m pretty sure probably say something dumb like “Who is Tom Hanks?”
Anyone with a half a brain should know that setting up a drug consumption site close to schools or where children are is not good move.
I vaguely recall the issue wasn’t around sites in places like the GTA, Ottawa, London, Windsor, etc. It had to do with smaller places where if the facility couldn’t be within x/y/z radius of this/that/another, they’d essentially be zoned right out of town, de facto shuttering the service for the community. That doesn't solve the problem, though I could see how it could come up fast in a small town.

There’s Rogers Centre in Toronto, Rogers Place in Edmonton, and Rogers Arena in Vancouver. I get having a marquee location with lots of exposure, but three of them? Seems like a heck of an investment for all the locals just to refer to the SkyDome, Ice District and GM Place anyway. Look at LA for a US example: we all know the Lakers won those championships and they host the Grammys at the Staples Center - not the Crypto.com Arena!
Is it a thing in all of Canada that if there is lightning nearby, an airport’s jet bridge cannot come out to the plane? Or is it just Toronto?

After we landed at Pearson, that’s what the captain said. We waited for an hour before we could taxi to the gate. Le sigh.

It’s a global safety practice, certainly not just in Canada or Toronto, commonly known as “Thor-Guard” (y’know, pesky Thor with his lightning bolts…). Lighting strikes within a set distance trigger the alert, and all outside movement stops until there’s an all-clear period + positive forecast. Another strike will reset the waiting period, so holds can last a long time in storms. All that moving metal, jet fuel, and electricity aren’t a good mix for the ground crew!!

Beyond just Star Alliance, AC/UA have a joint venture on their Canada-US travel. Moreso than codeshare and interlining passengers/cargo, they also share revenue on most of those routes. The result is to make it as seamless as possible for travellers because if the route is, say, YYZ-DEN Mondays at 10:00 am, UA could operate it one month and AC the next depending on fleet mix, projected demand spikes, etc. So AC definitely treated you like one of their own, because in a very real sense you were, hehe! Revenue JVs became common all over the world in the 2010s, but it’s particularly prevalent in North America and across the north Atlantic. I could go on and on forever but that's wayyy off topic...(most of my career background is in aviation, and no I don’t work for AC. ;))

Actually I have a confession to make, I didn't go to a single Tim Hortons the entire time I was in Toronto.

I used to love their breakfast sandwiches (in fact I always used to eat there before I found Fran's Restaurant) but then they stopped using real eggs. I can't stand that spongy white crap. So there went that idea.

 I fell for that one, at first. ;)

Anyone else noticed the media has gone silent on the talk of an early provincial election?

It seems to be definitely off the table as the by-election has been set to replace todd smith in Bay of Quinte on Sept 19th.

I missed the report in the toronto star (not hard given the amount old crap that clogs up their front page) and the only reason I found out about it a friend of my wifes' is running for the liberals.

Also tried to find out how long a premier has to call a by-election without luck (and I will not use chatgp or another ai crap),

You, ungrateful? I'd never imagine it in a million years. You always appear very grateful in your posts.

RE Zoning, can't be as bad as the time we had a strip club across from a high-school. But back to the consumption sites, we're losing our only one in our city. And we considered ourselves a mid-sized city.

Rogers here, there, and everywhere! But yeah, it must get expensive, and when you have many locations named after you, I'd think you would get diminishing returns when it comes to recognition. Those names sound so generic to me. At least, if they'd have compromised with something like Rogers Skydome, you'd still have something distinctly recognizable.

I call it the Skydome for two reasons: 1) nobody in the GTA calls it Rogers Centre, so why should I? and 2) I just like the sound of it.

Besides, we don't have Rogers down here, so that name means nothing to me anyway.

The Twins (baseball) play at Target FIELD. The Timberwolves (basketball) play at Target CENTER. When the new Vikings stadium was going up I thought they were gonna call it Target STADIUM but they totally dropped the ball on that.

Or you could say they missed the... Target.

Plus, you sound like an actual Canadian who knows the local sites rather than American ;)

pissant is trying to trigger and early federal election by calling on the ndp to withdraw its support for the liberals.

Hope Singh is smart enough to realize that if then govt falls, the policies that they pushed for (pharma and dental care) will be very quickly axed.

Longer to settle in and people might start to see the benefit and while it won’t save boy blunder and co, it might reduce the tories to a minority.

Did you see the weird ALL CAPS along with the Weirdly Wrong Capitalization in the media release? No matter how you vote, it's pretty obvious CPC HQ is just repeating a certain US politician's FOX-ready talking points, right down to the sentence structure. With a candidate shakeup in the States, now we're seeing just how tired that acidic rhetoric is in the polling. Maybe Poilievre & Co. will adjust accordingly, or maybe they won't. Eh.

The riding where I live (Vancouver-Centre) has been an LPC fortress for 31 years, since we unseated our last MP, then-Prime Minister Kim Campbell. Latest polling here has the CPC running slightly ahead of the LPC and the very same Prime Minister-defeating incumbent, MP Dr. Hedy Fry. If Vancouver-Centre is even in play, well...it's got to look grim for the LPC all over the map.

No matter what, it'll be interesting to see how things unfold in the CPC caucus after next autumn. Just by virtue of demographics, they're going to gain MPs from areas which will bring a younger and more urban voting base. In other words, they too will start to have a lot of competing priorites inside the party. As the LPC and former PCs will remind us, that can be way messier than a general election!

looks like singh has bowed to the pissants wishes and ended the support agreement with the liberals.

it's quite an achievement to take everything you've thing you've pushed for behind the woodshed.

his leadership will soon follow becasue no matter waht they think, they'll never amount to anything again.

even with the liberals under trudeau stinking like last weeks fish, the ndp are still in 3rd place.

I was so angry when I read about that this afternoon! I know it doesn't automatically trigger an election, the NDP can still support the Liberals on a case by case basis. (Or the BQ could vote with the Liberals even if the NDP doesn't.) But if the election does get triggered in the next couple months, I think it's safe to say we're ending up with a CPC majority.

My major hope was that Poilievre would peak early, and then as time went on, people would grow tired of him and his party's shenanigans. A lot of people seem to be supporting him because he's "Not Trudeau", but I'm guessing some people outside of his base haven't really looked at him that closely. The extra time gives people the opportunity to see who he really is. Even if it didn't stop the CPC victory, I was hoping they'd at least be held to a minority.

If they manage to get an election called while the CPC is in their peak, then that's all over.

I wish Trudeau had stepped down earlier this year...
