Emulation is better than modern gaming

I can think of only 2 recent games with lots of characters modeled after celebs: Death Stranding and Crime Boss: Rockay City
Deaths stranding is a Hidejo Kojima joint, thus weird on purpose...
Crime Boss: Rockay City is just a bad game...
Danny Trejo is in a lot of games though, including Yakuza 8...

Cyberpunk 2077?

I just… can’t. I used to love it. I used to be good at it… but these days it’s positively epilepsy inducing and… nah. 5 minutes with it and I was back to Mario Kart 8.

LOL I sorta feel this way towards the newer Mario Kart titles! They give me anxiety and stress me out due to the way they seem to cater towards shorter attention spans because they're often more about shiny objects and hitting your opponents with blue shells than simple driving skills and/or evading some occasional items on the road.

Or... I'm just old now

I spent about 3 months beating the time trials in Mario Kart 8… it definitely needs driving skills…

I’ve always been a fan of the Series and MK8 is a superb game.

Not to say you’re old, mind. I’m 45. It’s certainly a bit daft to say such a well crafted game is all just shiny objects though and a tad insulting to the people who really do enjoy it.

I think ultimately, tastes just differ? :)

I've always felt the Mario Kart games were more about arcade aspects of disrupting opponents rather than the actual racing, and there have been many games of this type over the years to the point that I consider them a separate genre from racing, and they can become quite annoying if all you want to do is race around the tracks.

That’s one side of it for sure and that can be a lot of fun with friends.

What I found *really* addictive in MK8 though were the Time Trials. Records set by the game developers that are baked into the game and you have to beat them.

You have to learn some :devil:fucking tricks:devil: Some of them are straightforward but a great many of them I raced against for days or weeks, some were beat within 0.01 of a second, but I beat them all. I screamed sometimes. I raged. But I did it.

When I went back to friendly play after that, I was a beast. My friends feared me. I knew the best place to turn in every track, all the shortcuts, the best routes (most tracks have an easy route and a hard route, the hard route is quicker but very tricky) and even a few ‘broken’ parts of the tracks that YouTubers taught me how to exploit. Best vehicles and best riders for each track as well... haha. God.

I learned to race. It doesn’t matter a hoot if someone blue-shells me. I can always come back. I'm usually so far ahead of everyone else (at least a lap) that I'm racing again before anyone's even caught up.

It’s one of my favourite games ever, as a lifelong fan of the series. You should watch some Rainbow Road Time-Trials on YouTube. Those YouTubers drive like absolute motherfuckers.

Apologies for gushing, but I smile when I even think about MK8 Deluxe.

Yeah, playing with friends is one thing. It makes for a fun party game. But if you're trying to play alone, it can be super annoying as the AI is known to cheat. I've often found that computer characters often overuse the powerups. Not to mention the rubber-banding that is so often in effect in racing games.

Mind you've I've only ever played the Wii version available on the original Wii. I don't know if I'd have the patience for that type of game these days.

MK8 is special I think. I don't know if you know your Zelda, but it is to MKWii what Breath of the Wild is to Skyward Sword. It's just on a whole other level. It's gorgeous to look at as well.

God, my Switch has been broken for ages and I'm actually considering buying a new one just to play it again...

There are worse ideas than buying a Switch. Unless the next Switch comes out next year, lets you use the same game library, and has full backwards compatibility.

Haven't played any of the Zeldas since Twilight Princess. I'm just not much of a Nintendo follower these days. I don't think I'm the right target audience. I've seen plenty of gameplay videos of the newer Zeldas, but the gameplay confounds me.

I know what you mean. I fall in and out of gaming. I can go months or even years without playing anything at all and then have a sudden, often lengthy period when I play everyday and then suddenly… dead stop again.

Very weird I suppose. I can play everyday for a year or more and then quite suddenly stop… the Switch really reignited my love, but I haven’t played for months because the sticks are fucked (it’s a shitty Switch thing) and I’m too lazy to get them fixed…

I tell you what though, I’m just thinking… Hollow Knight doesn’t need sticks. I can use the D-Pad….

Hmmmm…

By the end of the year. I’ve got a tatty turquoise Switch Mini right now, but I wanna get an OLED one before Christmas.

It’s definitely on the list.

Haha, yeah, the weirdest thing is stopping with a game, even for several weeks, then trying to get back to it. Often I have to try to rewire my brain as it all feels so alien to me, especially if a game uses unorthodox controls and specific keys to press unique to that game.

Turn off your phone (or silence it, in case of anticipated emergency use) and turn off your internet (or at least step away from the PC). Plug in a cartridge of Super Mario World. Pop in that Final Fantasy Tactics disc. Slide in that Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow chip. If you've a nearby buddy, ask them to join...either as a spectator or an alternative player who will "tag in" whenever you feel like taking a break and "tagging out". A couch is ideal; a basement is great. Drinks are optional yet welcome.

Playing a game absent an online connection or system notifications while relying on naught but grey matter is quite the elemental experience. Of course, if you can afford a genuine copy of an authentic game guide from the 80s/90s/00s, feel free to indulge; you are only adding to the old school experience.

Dreaded Joycon stick drift? I ended up having to replace the joycons on my son's Switch. Things aren't cheap. Though you're in a bad spot there if you're sporting the Switch Lite.

I will say N64, PS2 and Gamecube games look fantastic in 1080p. And the ability to save at any point, rewind and savescum your way through games that were too hard or annoyingly long between saves means you get to enjoy them to the end is utterly fantastic. Especially when you're old and have a life.

Also the R36S handheld is 100x better than the Ultra Gameboy photoshop gaming magazine April fools gags from the 90s.

I used to play a few NES and SNES emulators on my PC all the time, and then for some strange reason my controllers all stopped working. I don't know what caused it either, but I've thought of getting some simpler USB ones to replace them.

Multiple controllers? Might be the USB port going bad.
