Exactly. Trek has its variety of storytelling and that's part of its charm. Excluding comedy because "Trek must be serious" seems very likely to give rise to complaints of "grimdark" again.

I might have missed a comment and I might be wrong, but I don't think anyone here is going to argue that comedy has no place in Star Trek.

Ah, but you see..."Some people don't like fun!" is an easy way of attempting to paint anyone with misgivings with the same brush.
Right. I think many people don't mind a little bit of comedy. As I said I don't mind light hearted stuff. But if it gets to silly they start to lose me.
An example of a franchise that went to far and most likely influenced by Superhero movies is Fast and The Furious...I loved the Fast and Furious Franchise. It was fun and over the top but not too over the top. The first 3 movies were about the same tone. Dom could get hurt, there were some consequences of their actions etc. By movie 4 they ramped things up a bit. Still I was ok with it. I thought it was neat to see these racers who were thieves move into a bigger world helping out the FBI or whatever. By movie 6 I thought uh oh they are going a bit overboard. When Dom took his classic Daytona and crashed it along the freeway barrier and jumped off the car over into the next lane.
But I was still ok with that and thinking ok. They went a little too far but I'm still enjoying it. MOVIE 7....THAT IS WHEN THEY STARTED TO LOSE ME.
Dom now is acting like the incredible Hulk and slams his foot onto cracked pavement and takes an already unstable parking structure the rest of the way down.
Since 7 they have continued to increase the action to ridiculous levels that I no longer love the franchise like I once did. Dom doesn't even bleed anymore like he did in the first film. He was thrown like 50 feet in movie 9 and literally bounced off the pavement and his shirt was a little dirty. So anyhow thats what I don't want to happen to Trek. Where they go too far with something just because they think it's the popular thing to do.....
And doing a comedy series means that?
Again, I feel like the conclusions being jumped to by fans over one announcement are stretching it and creating anxiety for no good reason.

I'm not saying it is going to happen for sure. But in the example I gave you with FF a lot of programs and films tend to follow certain trends of other programs or films. Look what we got last season with SNW. A cartoon and a musical episode. Both which have been done by other shows. Now we are getting a comedy series. We shall see what happens but I'm not optimistic. I just wish tptb would keep Trek within its genre. If not perhaps it's time for a real break. Live action Trek hasn't had a big enough break since 1979.
Star Trek has always been a variety platform. Horror, comedy, military, action, drama, Shakespeare, etc.
All this is doing is expanding the frequency of such stories.

The very definition of an in joke. There for the people who have watched other iterations of Trek.
That is part of why it is a successful platform, you get all those things in many of the series. Not sure I'm interested in being locked into one genre for a Trek series. If I want workplace comedy, there are a lot of places to go, many of which are far more pointed in their comedy.

If I'm wrong, I'll admit I'm wrong. Just like Picard (I thought it would be great) and Lower Decks (I thought it would be a train wreck).
I don't think I know enough to say it has anything written on it.
