What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

ENT Season 3... even speaking as a non-fan, I think a more upbeat theme doesn't fit the "this is a Post-9/11 Star Trek!" vibe at all.

Season 4, on the other hand, yeah, I think it fits. Earth rises in prominence and they're working their way up to the Federation being founded.

Take your pick. (Psst. It's the last one.)

The Enterprise theme is not bad actually. When first heard it I thought it was Rod Stewart, then I learned the original version was by Stewart and this is some cover.

Not a TNG fan?

(Looks at Courage, Steiner, Kaplan, Fried, etc.)
Star Trek?

(RIP Jerry.)
I didn't say Goldsmith was the only good and important composer for Star Trek.
Btw some days ago, on the 21st it was 20 years that Goldsmith left us. RIP
Well, I like TNG but my favorites are TOS and DS9.

It's not a loophole, it's the Prime Directive. It's the flip side of "You don't have warp drive, we can't rescue ANY of you when your planet burns." The Ba'ku have interstellar travel. And IIRC they are in Federation space. (I never thought about that. What the hell kind of borders does the Fed have if not every world in its space has to be a member?)

Easy. A system can be definied up to a point and if a system is not in the federation, then the limit is there: the heliopause or heliosheath. If It's a world, then its orbit and nearby space up to some median up to another world. A interstellar polity could consist of multiple systems and their shared space or corridors in between, and maybe some freedom of movement with deep space working akin to the high seas.

Space borders will be 3d, demarcated by buoys and computers, and *fullll* of Holes. Sort of like this, though this is a 2d look down (not even a slice!) :

Or like this from a 3d view, or like:

(Federation map, Atomic Rockets: Galactic Empire Maps, Starfleet Museum) You go up and over and connect with direct lines and if someone doesn't want to join, well, they don't, and you negotiate travel, trade, and customs thereof.

Maybe it is me, but the thread is becoming more basic 'personal opinion' than 'controversial opinion'.

Please get back to the hot stuff.

Personal opinion - Captain Pike is a good captain (less of these please and more)

Controversial opinion - Captain Pike is not the best captain to be in a crisis - look how he freezes at the end of season 2....

Even more Controversial opinion- Star Trek Nemesis is the best Trek movie ever! (Ok that's outrageous, but you get the drift)
Gracias :)

Well, that is definitely a controversial one.
Well, that's the name of the thread ;)

And honestly, it is isn't a commentary on what is the better movie. It's just a preference of interesting themes and ideas that I find more interesting.

Nemesis has more Romulans, which I definitely welcome, as well as a pretty fun little escape sequence with the Scorpion ship. It doesn't have the Borg.

For me, it's just fun. It's a fun little adventure.

As you said, you delivered on the name of the thread.

I shall do the same... but with TWO.

Controversial opinion #1: "MOVE ALONG HOME" is a really good episode.

Controversial opinion #2: "THRESHOLD" is a very solid episode, with only the final 5 minutes or so that bring it down overall. (Except for the final conversation between Janeway and Paris. Another good character beat for Tom.)

And I WILL continue to defend these episodes as long as I draw breath. (Which is a good thing that breathing is involuntary, because my drawing skills are abysmal. I did NOT inherit my mom's drawing skills.)

Controversial, huh? I had this thought a few days ago that I shared with my brother that I didn't share here because I thought it ironically would be "too controversial", which I guess makes it perfect for here!

Seven of Nine taking over as Captain of the Enterprise (albeit with the G) after Picard saved the day (albeit with the D), means that Seven is the Kamala Harris to Picard's Joe Biden!

There. I said it! Bring on Seven of Nine! (And Kamala Harris too, while we're at it, but that's getting off Trek... )

Adding to it, Joe Biden and Patrick Stewart were born around a similar time (Stewart in 1940, Biden in 1942) and Kamala Harris and Jeri Ryan were also born around a similar time (Harris in 1964, Ryan in 1968).

Some of the best music composed for a TV series.... :) I adore Goldsmith's work, but Star Trek did just fine long before he joined up.

I missed this post. Yes, that's all I'm saying. Jerry was amazing and so were many composers after him. But Star Trek had its entire run without him.

Everything else.

Shatner vs. Hunter would probably say otherwise.

I don’t like PRO. I’ve tried to watch it thrice now. The first time I never went back after episode 1. The second I got as far as 3. The third I did 1 again and thought… ‘I’m not enjoying this’ and stopped.

I wish I could see what so many see on this board ‘cause I see so many smart posters singing its praises, but it leaves me absolutely cold.

^ This.
For me the music is very important, too. Just like characters or ships.
I couldn't enjoy the show wtih bad or wrong music.
F.e. what would Star Trek be without Jerry Goldsmith?
What would Star Trek be without Alexander Courage's franchise-defining, franchise-transcending music?

I'll also say the same about the unforgettable contributions of Fred Steiner, Joseph Mullendore, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, et al.

Well put; I believe Goldsmith is one of film's top three or five composers in history, and one of the few one could describe as a genius.

Been watching DS9 and as amazing as they are…Trek’s space battle scenes don’t make a whit of sense.

The writers have two-dimensional thinking. So, we have to get past an enemy fleet. The fleets are always gathered horizontally. Well, how about simply flying upward or downward?

Am I missing something?
