Why are Star Trek fans made fun of more than Star Wars fans in popular culture?

For nearly half a century, I have held an absolute and unshakable conviction that every junior high, high school, junior college, and university should not only offer Industrial Arts, but require at least one semester for graduation, as part of the GenEd.

I was thinking of another difference. After "Return of the Jedi" the SW fandom began to fade a little. Instead, Star Trek, thanks to the films and new television series, was thriving. When the famous SNL skit came out, SW fandom was probably in its darkest period. So it was thought that there was simply, well, no one to make fun of

Okay, this is funny. I'm in an amateur theater group and we are preparing a play. The director just said to me "You know, your character is a bit of a nerd..." she thought about it for a while and she said to me "Do you happen to have a t-shirt with, whataretheirnames, Kirk and Spock on it?"

Me: "Maybe..?"

(People, let me know if you want to see my "stage costume"!)
I performed in 13 plays and musicals in less than ten years.

SHOW US!

I think it's because Star Wars fans will attack you with a lightsaber if you make fun of them. Now if more Trekkers carried phasers...

Star Trek is ingrained into pop culture to an extent... everyone knows "Captain Kirk", "Enterprise", "Beam me up", etc. But I would wager a good many of those people have never so much as watched an episode of Star Trek or have seen a movie. If they HAVE seen something of Star Trek... they're either old and it was TOS, or it was one of the Kelvin movies.

In the landscape of the 80's I grew up in, I actually came to know the TOS crew via some of the computer games that were out at the time, before I actually ended up watching the show. TNG hadn't yet been a thing, and the cultural zeitgeist of Star Trek was huge.

Oh dear Prophets, I remember that. One of those times you cringe when somebody passes you the newspaper and says, “hey, aren’t YOU a Trekkie?!” And you kind of want the ground to swallow you up.
You know, I might as well almost let the uniform slide. Almost . The problem is she was wearing a tricorder and a phaser toys. It was too much.

I wish I had gone to vocational school myself…
I think i mentioned this in a different thread a while back, but i's funny how years ago everyone thought robots would replace vocational workers, but in actuality AI is more likely to replace white collar office workers who sit in front of a computer all day.

I would say that something analogous to that has existed with respect to Star Trek for a very long time. In particular, one of my elementary school teachers had a trio of dresses that -- although neither low-cut, nor miniskirted, nor velour -- somehow vaguely suggested TOS uniforms, by the colors and the overall lines.
heh, I used to have a v-necked mustard gold sweater that when I wore it people used to comment on it looking like Captain Kirk.

Can't wait for the AI counselors.
