Actually, I could see Koenig possibly going for it. Pretty much everyone knew going into it that STVI was going to be the last film with the original crew, and Koenig actually volunteered to have Chekov killed off in the STVI treatment he wrote for the studio.

I agree that Koenig's response would likely have been positive (I'd love to know what he'd make of that idea nowadays, too); the whole idea would make for an absolutely fascinating "What If" AU scenario, IMHO. In fact, I think I'd rather have seen that than if they'd actually brought Saavik back.

Oh that I could definitely get behind! Though I do have to voice the likely unpopular opinion that I'd much rather have had Robin Curtis back if they were to include Saavik at all
