Maybe it's a stupid question, but why did 9/11 stop the project? Maybe it seemed like the story of a civilization swept away seemed too morbid in that period?Yes - correct! That was his first outing with the project with DeSanto. Aside from RDM's version, that one had the best chance of getting off the ground. As you say, props and sets were built and the whole thing was scuttled post-9/11.
After having gone back and done the research, 5 years was an extremely kind assessment on my part…
I was honestly more put off by the feeling that a lot of the writing was poor and somewhat nonsensical (sometimes to serve a plot point) than aspects of the series being modified and re-imagined. I don't mind that as much if it's done well, but I'm not convinced Moore did that well with the pilot.
YMMV of course.
