Friday, the usual - groceries.

I ordered another Critter Cage 20 gallon tall (16 inches tall) for my boys, Michael and Erik. That way the little varmints can't escape. I've spent a fortune on those two gerbils. I love them. They are so cute. The Critter Cage has a sliding wire mesh top that clicks into place when closed. It's quite secure. I should get the tank Saturday :D

I've been very bad lately. I bought another hat. Well, ordered it. That means I have two custom hats in the making right now. I got chummy with a milliner in the East Village and she's making me a felted cloche for $100 (down from her normal fee of $150), and I have another milliner working on a silk cloche. The latter is in Germany right now investigating vintage fabrics! :)

The silk hat will probably be around $200-250, because it's a replica of a hat in a film and so the milliner will have to produce a pattern and a prototype first. But it'll SO be worth it!

I'll have to be good from now on, though. Boo.

Or, at least till summer, because the first milliner said she's working on creating straw cloches with linen flowers! I can't wait to see them!

Nothing too fun...just groceries.

But yesterday bought: new Serenity dvd(more goodies on it) We Are Marshall, and a couple other dvds. Oh and then went to lunch with hubby and bought that :)

WARNING WARNING WARNING
EXTREMELY BAD PUN APPROACHING

tsq, if you were in the Army, you could be looking for...Military millinery. :guffaw: :guffaw:

Thank you thank you, I'm here all week. ;)

(Actually, I tell a lie. I fainted right after tsq said "I've been very bad lately..." )

^I don't actually work for the schools, just in them. And I bike everywhere, so we'll say the money I spent on that hat and the gorgeous fresh tuna steak and white wine I am presently enjoying is what I saved on gas!

And the way prices are nowadays, the hat, wine and meal all probably cost the same as a single fill-up on a small car.

Which film/hat?

Bespoke/custom is addictive, for sure. Once you start, you don't go back. Well, unless it's a really, really big sale. Then you'd be silly not to buy lots and lots of bargains. Obviously. :D

My mother showed me the movie Paper Moon when I was nine, and I have wanted Addie's hat ever since:

It is such a unique, lovely little cloche. It is very period, but I can totally pull it off. :D
It is difficult because all we have to go on are stills from the movie, and it is in black and white. I've scoured the web and while I've found a few color pictures of the shoot, she's not wearing the hat in any of them -- but I don't mind choosing the color!
At first we thought the hat was a fine linen, but my milliner has a keen eye, and while watching the film she caught several scenes in which the hat has a sheen unique to silk.

This hat put the seed of millinery passion into my young, impressionable heart. Since then, whenever I have shopped for a hat, an image of this hat has been pasted on my mind's eye, so that each hat I see is compared to it -- and, O, but they always pale in that comparison! So not only will I have the joy of finally getting this long-desired cloche, but I will be freed from its unmatch-ability; I will be able to truly shop for hats without the burden of them never measuring up! Well worth the money!

Heaven forbid!

It will be, but unfortunately it will be awhile before I get it. I was at a teaching artist conference today -- about the only time I get to associate with the other adults who work for the project -- and the man who's mother is my milliner told me she had an accident in Germany. Apparently the poor woman took a terrible fall, breaking several bones and requiring surgery! She is supposed to be okay, eventually, and asked her son to tell me that she still wants to make the hat if I am willing to wait. The poor woman! I wasn't even thinking about the hat when I heard what happened!
I'm glad she'll be okay, and I've waited for this hat for 16 years, I can wait a bit longer, I think. :)

In the meantime, there was a hat I saw that I decided against because I was already going in for a fabric hat, but since I won't be getting mine for some time...

57" tripod. Paid $10 for it brand new, came with carrying satchel, built in balancing levels, extended snap fit legs, 3 way adjusting mount and quick release head so I could use the night shot feature on my Polaroid i531 digital camera. I took my first night shot with it tonight (something I've always wanted to do).

Here's the pic just in case you want to see it: :D (resized for bandwidth)
