Shatner Slams E.U. Censors Proposal to Ban Star Trek’s “To Boldly Go Where No MAN Has Gone Before "

we've strayed from the OP topic in quite a number of ways.

Not as far as you think. It's really all about freedom of speech and expression. So we haven't strayed as much as expanded.

Besides, we don't get many controversial topics in the forums that are under the oversight of the admins. It's nice to be able to take unpopular positions without getting silenced.

I genuinely don’t understand how there can be a situation where I can say “women are only good for breeding and cooking and should get back in the house where they belong” and be the wronged party if someone took it upon themselves to lamp me

I assume that "lamp" means "attack".

I think Wesley Snipes said it best in "Demolition Man"... "you can't take away people's right to be :censored:holes."

If you want to say that a woman's place is in the home... go ahead. I'll laugh and say how pathetic you are and that'll be the end of it. You try to enforce that sentiment with threats or violence, I will take appropriate action.

Lamp would be to punch someone - you absolutely are right that you can’t take away someone’s right to be an arsehole but if I express those views at home/in private I don’t expect much reprisal but if I stand up in a crowded room I’d be stupid not to expect some sort of physical response, even if it was the doorman of a pub dragging me out and leaving one of me to make a point

I can go along with that. I might not support legal consequences for saying something disgusting, but I'm probably going to look the other way if the guy just gets a punch in the mouth. So maybe there's a bit of the anarchist in me. ;)

You know the part of my remark that you left out of your quote, the part where I discussed the fact that the OP's claims of censorship have been debunked? That's important context for my remark.

Censorship is an important topic, but non-existent censorship is something else, and we have strayed now from discussion of the issue raised in the OP completely. We're off discussing multiple issues that were not mentioned or even implied by the OP; what we're trying to discuss, at least what I'm trying to discuss, is grounded in reality.

Yes, important topics such as censorship deserve discussion, but I've seen no evidence of anybody's opinions being silenced.

Considering "where no man has gone before" is not being banned in the EU, we've strayed from the OP topic in quite a number of ways.

Maybe it's not banned but it is also a dead issue and even when it was sort of a issue around 1987 it was barely a issue because the original version isn't really that bad in itself. Just trying to resurrect a dead issue instead of focusing on real issues to me is a example of a distraction created so people end up talking about this instead of real issues.

Exactly. These sorts of distractions tend to take on a life of their own. They're kinda like zombies!

Ladies and gentlemen: this thread is a textbook example of why politics works. Deflect and use a strawman and you, too, can win a nomination or even office!

It's what happens when we focus on issues and not building relationships with our fellow humans.

Which is the idea in which I built my whole hugging solution idea is built around. Once people find common things they share to get along with each other, it makes it easier to deal with the issues in which they don't agree and opens up people to the idea of compromise as opposed to always digging in deeper and refusing to ever change.

Something that has gotten lost here is that William Shatner doesn't do social media. By his own admission, he didn't even know how to use email until he got his first smartphone; the books he "wrote" were stream-of-consciousness babbling he spoke into a tape recorder and then passed onto his ghost writers.

His hyper-conservative and reactionary daughter, Melanie, has managed his online presence since the very inception.

Is she the one who was one of the kids in "MIri" and also later a ensign in Trek 5 giving him a device to record a Captain's Log?

That was the point I was making.

Too bad we can't change the topic title. We did that sometimes on my prior board, when a discussion drifted but the new topic was really interesting. But I think the rules on this board are different.

No, according to Memory Alpha it was Leslie and Lisabeth Shatner who appeared in "Miri" and not Melanie. Melanie appeared in Star Treks IV and V.

This quote from the film "The American President" summarizes my view fairly well:
Everybody knows American isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating, at the top of his lungs, that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours."

Voltaire....only with added walking and talking.

I'm glad Leslie Nielsen temporarily made the world come its senses at the end of the first NAKED GUN. Sorkin's channelling Voltaire, and you're clearly inspired by a world where not only Middle Easterners can resolve their differences, but dogs and mailmen as well.

I think I have a vague idea that I did hear that once about Shatner's daughter being the jogger but for the life of me I am not sure where I heard that or even if I did hear that and I am not confusing it with some other vague memory I have about something.

In your opinion it should - great; in mine it shouldn’t - also great

We can disagree on the point but especially due to the differing cultural backgrounds you can appreciate at least why I may have a differing view

If I might ask - and without simply stating that it is a constitutional right - why do you believe people should be able to say things that are hateful, racist, sexist etc without censure?

I genuinely don’t understand how there can be a situation where I can say “women are only good for breeding and cooking and should get back in the house where they belong” and be the wronged party if someone took it upon themselves to lamp me

A qoute from a Supreme Court US Justice

A law that can be directed against speech found offensive to some portion of the public can be turned against minority and dissenting views to the detriment of all. The First Amendment does not entrust that power to the government's benevolence. Instead, our reliance must be on the substantial safeguards of free and open discussion in a democratic society

It goes back to.. who says its hate speechone group says X is one group says its not. There are some universal rules but it comes down to who makes the rules? Humans are fail able

The way I've always seen free speech is it doesn't mean you can say anything you want anywhere, at any time, it simply means the government can't disappear me just because I said something they don't like, and it doesn't protect me from retaliation by other individuals or non-government groups.
So I can't get thrown in jail just because I said group A sucks, but I can still get fired if my bosses don't like me saying that, because that is not being thrown in jail.

The difference though is to fire someone I think it has for the most part been felt that the offense has to be really out their. Someone complaining about politics on their free time on the internet, away from work is really none of their business. On the other hand harassing co-workers and insulting them because of politics means your bringing your opinions into the workplace and being disruptive and most people would be okay for someone being fired in that situation.
