Which version of the bridge?

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I've probably asked this already...and yes, I am well aware that the reason there's a different bridge is because SNW is shot in a different studio...but:

what is the official word, in-universe, about the change? Is the bridge supposed to always have looked like it does in SNW, or was there a refit/replacement?

To rephrase: If they do a Captain April episode, which version are they going to use?

Given how different the bridge looked from the 1964 Star Trek pilot to the 1966 first regular episode filmed entitled The Corbomite Maneuver, to be honest I don't see an issue. Even back in the late '60s and early '70s fans conjectured that Federation starship Bridges were modular, and the modules could be swapped out quickly and easily.

I'm honestly a big fan of the original TOS TV Bridge set, but that said I have to say that the Bride set visual update they did for Strange New Worlds works really well in that it looks really good for a 21st century TV production, yet still retains the roots of and plenty of obvious callbacks to the original Enterprise Bridge set from TOS.:techman:

I really like the DSC version of the bridge. I wish there had been a way for them to keep it. And yeah, I DO LIKE the corridor on the outside! :D

I mean, I heard tales about how they built the DSC Enterprise bridge to last - they didn't just build it on the cheap like 'guest' bridges tend to be. So I assumed they had some kind of long term plan for it. (And of course SNW was not even thought of when that bridge was constructed.) Perhaps it's in storage, ready to be reused if necessary?

Hope springs eternal. :)

The basic Discovery Bridge set was used for five seasons. It's normal for any main Standing TV series set to be built to last as (best case), the production company in studio think they'll be using and working with said set for a number of years, and can also amortize the cost of that set's construction over those years.

That's in contrast to your average feature film movie set, where in general they know they're going to use it for a few days, up to a few months ar most; but in the end once filming is done it goes into the Trash heap.

No, I don't mean the bridge of the actual USS Discovery. Obviously that bridge must last. I was talking about the DSC version of the Enterprise bridge.

The ship was in drydock in episode one.
Bridge probably got changed at the same time hey added those new windows on the rim.

If they were to do flashback, they'd probably just take the cheapest option and just use the bridge as it is. Maybe change some colours.

Way back during the TNG days, Mike Okuda came up with the idea that bridges are modular and can be installed or uninstalled at will on a starship.

I just assume that the bridge module seen in SNW is separate from the module in DIS.

the SNW bridge looks like an updated version of the one from the Cage. if they did do an April flashback episode I wonder which uniform they would use. An updated version of the Cage uniforms, the blue unis we saw in Discovery S1 and S2 or the traditional Gold/Red/Blue ones.

So the SNW bridge might be a reinterpretation of what it may have looked like under Kirk. Think that's why the bridge in the alternate future of the S1 finale looked identical to it ;)

There's a picture in Pike's quarters of him and April wearing a variation of uniforms from The Cage. Although a deleted scene from S1 showing when Pike and Alora first met has him wearing a variation of the current SNW uniforms.

You mean DSC, right? ;)

I didn't know there was a whole deleted scene. But there is a picture of Pike dressed in DSC blue in that episode.

No, young Pike is wearing a red TOS-ish uniform.

As for the question of how they'd redress the bridge for an April-era flashback, in the season 1 finale, they decked out the Farragut bridge with pilot-style "gooseneck" screens which was... confusing... but is an option for making an older-style version of the bridge. They could also repaint it in gray and silver, as it was in "The Cage" instead of the cheery classic TOS colors it has now.

I'm pretty sure they just rebuilt the "built-to-last" 1701 bridge from DSC into the SNW version.

Instead of paint, they can now change colors and station view screens with CGI and/or "vinyl wrap" the surfaces so it can be easily removed.

For me, I like the current SNW Enterprise bridge over the Disco version where the corridor around the bridge looks out of place and simply a waste of space. The SNW smaller area seems more cozy/personal. :)

I loved the corridor in the Disco version of the Enterprise, as well as the use of the Into Darkness cool blue tint.

But what works for a movie or a cameo might not for a series. I'm guessing they save money on corridor walking extras in SNW.

It was fun walking around those corridors on the Roddenberry Archive to see they went nowhere at all:lol:

But like I said, SNW and DSC film in different studios.

So you're saying they just packed up that whole massive DSC version of the bridge, somehow moved it en masse to the SNW studios,, and THEN revised it?

Discovery filmed in Toronto. Strange New Worlds is filmed primarily in Mississauga. Just down the road.

It's not beyond imagination that they disassembled the Bridge, modified it, and reassembled it at the new studio in its new configuration.
