"Everything depends on opinion. It is according to opinion that we suffer. A man is as wretched as he has convinced himself that he is" - Seneca

i.e. don't get a knot in your shorts about social media. this is pointless. amusing, slightly but pointless.
If I may it’s because since certain youtubers are loosing in views then they would post takes they intentionally know that would get people riled up. Especially on VERY sensitive topics. When criticized they will use the defense that Star Trek has always been political other than clarifying it’s their personal account and not their media representative account.

As a suggestion, try not being hypocritical. You attempted to rile people up by discussing controls and consequences for free speech without specifying what it was that was giving you an emotional wedgie until page 3. Had these "VERY sensitive topics" had opinions that skewed your way, there's very little reason to believe you would have bothered to share your mental fart here in the air-tight and crowded confines of this forum's dutch oven.

Several people, who are far more reasonable than I can ever hope to be, have offered you the suggestion of just blocking or otherwise not listening to whoever the terrible ne'er-do-well it was that gave you a shocking opinion. If these people aren't advocating something that is truly hurtful, i.e. endangering another person's liberty, welfare, safety, or equality, what the flying fuck do you care? Move on.

If you can't watch Star Trek while knowing what the actors' or other fans' political opinions are, find yourself a nice Kevin Sorbo starring rerun on physical media somewhere and chill out.

This could probably have been seen as a political statement by those so inclined.

However, if Star Trek actors choose to make public statements along the lines of "Don't be in such a rush to read in a lot of stuff which was never there, just to suit your own prejudices and preconceptions," then I'm pretty much OK with that.

Well, there is one thing “Mary” is right about: Ortegas has gotten almost zero character development. Short of ‘smart-aleck pilot who Boimler told us is a war veteran and Travis Mayweather is her idol,’ Ortegas is pretty much a completely one-dimensional character who is the most expendable of all the cast. I’ve never seen Navia in anything else so I can’t judge her acting ability, but I’m almost certain that she could vastly improve on Ortegas’s development if the show would focus on her as much as they have with every other character on that show.

Also, I don’t like Ortegas’s hairstyle either, but not because I have a bigoted anti-lesbian agenda. I just don’t like the hairstyle.

Well, Star Trek has been political and woke since 1964.

Well, Star Trek has been political and woke since 1964.

But it's no longer 1964. That's the ultimate sticking point.

In 1964 there was no social media. Actors, content creators, fans, etc had no platform on which they could share their political views or social commentary.

While some may argue that, had social media existed in 1964, we would have seen the same comments or points of view that have fueled this very topic. I feel there is an additional element. People have changed. Maybe it's because of social media, or maybe it's something else, but people have become more vocal, more willing to express their opinions. Further, especially since the 2016 US presidential election, people have become more militant, more extreme in their views. Gone are the days of "live and let live." Now people feel if you are not with them, then you must be against them. Even expressing a neutral opinion is taken as opposition of whatever the cause might be.

Trek has always been political, but politics was not so much shoved in one's face as it is today, and that's including the fact the 50s and 60s saw riots, walk outs, protests, and sit ins.

This 100%

So are you not addressing the specific point that was listed in the thread

The original point, such as it is, has already been thoroughly addressed. TV stars say things you don’t like, you disagree, their fans disagree with you. Welcome to the internet. No one is “shoving” anything in anyone’s face.

Unfollow. Stop watching.

So, the answer is to accept that times have changed. Light the candle instead of cursing the darkness. Adapt to the times. By that I do not mean conforming to whatever view we disagree with. I mean understand that social media is a platform where people share their political views. Take the suggesting made in this topic.

For the most part my social media feeds are free of political commentary. For the most part. Can't escape it entirely. I don't follow any particular actors or whatnot. I did stop following one particular content creator because I found him to be a bit too militant and closed minded in his commentary. There is enough Star Trek social media content available that I can be discerning and selective.

I also know better than to fight on social media with people who have opposing views and a large enough fan base that it will go poorly for me. Sadly, can't say the same for poor Mary in those screen grabs above. After all, you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Jim.

I read that on one of the Enterprise D bridge consoles

I am perfectly fine with Trek or Disney or anyone else being as woke as it wants to be. They present a product, and the viewers choose to partake of said product, or not. That's capitalism at work. And if going woke makes you go broke, that's capitalism too.

I only use X to see what others are saying on a topic im interested in, maybe gather some new information. I don't really follow anybody, and no one follows me. I use Facebook to see cat videos or humor memes.
I'm barely on maybe 10 minutes in a day. Don't need it.

a wretched hive of scum and villainy.. we must be cautious.

Goes back to what my ex wife's mother once said.. " I can be miserable by my self.. I don't need your help"

Doesn't that only protect you from government censure? Not privately owned websites, like Twitter, Facebook, TrekBBS.
Yes, basically. This is what some people, especially "free speech absolutist" dum-dums don't get. The First Amendment protects you from prosecution by the government for speech criticizing the government or speech deemed offensive (assuming its not connected to any criminal acts). It doesn't protect you from the consequences of speech, like having other people criticize your speech or having companies end their relationship with you. They're exercising their right to freedom of speech and freedom of association under the First Amendment.

True talk, I used to be like our friend here, thinking people who posted stuff I didn't like shouldn't be able to. But you know what, I found ignoring people is really the best way. Logging off periodically from social media, or not getting involved in the first place is the bestest way.
