"The Comet Chasers"
The Enterprise is dispatched to the Neutral Zone to deal with reported sightings of a Romulan Bird-of-prey in Federation space. However, each time a new sighting is reported, the Enterprise finds they find there is nothing particularly wrong with the starbase or outpost reporting the sighting, and no Romulan ship to be found. Even more strange, in each instance, the station or outpost denies having reported a sighting of a Romulan ship at all. After the third reported sighting with no results, a frustrated Kirk is about to call off this "wild comet chase" when Spock finally discover that a strange noise can be heard in all the audio transmissions alerting the Enterprise of a Romulan sighting. The noise is narrowed down to an Orion Pirate, who is operating on a moon just outside the neutral zone. When the Enterprise arrives at the moon to apprehend the Pirate, his base of operations is found abandoned. McCoy quips, "If you chase a comet long enough, it's bound to get away."
