Fandom survey (sociodemographics, political leanings, personality)

Hi there folks, would you mind taking my Star Trek fandom survey? It should have some interesting things to say about Star Trek fans vs a small group of non-fans who've taken the same survey. You can skip any question that makes you uncomfortable.

Taking the survey should only take about 5 minutes. If you're feeling extra generous, please share it on social media or via other means. I've posted it to Facebook, Reddit, and had it posted by others to a few other places. But the more diverse reach it has, beyond my extended friends circle, the better. Thank you!

Done.

For the relevant Trek-related questions...

Favorite Series: Still going with Discovery. As much as I like Picard, it depends too much on your having seen a ton of other things. I don't get that feeling with Disco 99% of the time. That makes it easier to share DIscovery with other people.

Do you like the JJ Abrams films: Kinda.

Do you like Old Trek (Pre-2017) or New Trek (since 2017): Both.

How did you discover Star Trek? Through my parents.

What do you like best about Star Trek? That it takes place in the future.

What do you like least? Bad episodes.

Thank you! And agree, that was an unfortunate oversight on my part. There have been many people filling that in.
I felt like that question and few others should have been multiple selection. I'm 63 and I've had several 'careers' in my life.

Hello StStats

I see you are new to the site and just joined today, tell us a bit about yourself and the reason for the survey. I am hoping you have not joined just for this purpose.

I'm a long-time Star Trek fan who's interested in looking at how and why people become fans, who they are, and how Star Trek may influence their lives. This is purely a personal, not-for-profit project. TBH I did initially join for the purpose of getting more coverage for my survey. But I can see the community here is quite active and interesting, and do plan on sticking around. I also plan on posting my survey results after I complete the analysis next year.

I had no option to choose MFA as my terminal degree (it was a 4 year master's degree in creative writing rather than a 2 year master's degree in English). I think you might also want to add BFA, which can mean extra coursework beyond the bachelor's.

I did enjoy reading your questions.

The problem I had the most difficulty with is the "who had the most influence on my life". I am pretty equal parts both parents. Is there a way that question could have allowed multiple answers?

Yep, this is another one of the questions where I could have better about the available options. There have been many people filling in "both parents."

This was my first time designing a survey from scratch for such a wide audience. I did have a diverse set of people review it before releasing it to the public but we just didn't catch everything.

Might be interesting to add MBTI as a personality factor beyond asking for extraverted or introverted.

I know surveys in the past have shown INTJs and INTPs are greatly overrepresented in Star Trek fans online. Would be really interesting to have that along with political orientation, especially as surveys show INTJ types tend to be very politically pragmatic.

No, thanks.

Surveys can't simply be changed once they've started cause people who finished them would have to be brought back and re-answer everything with changes.
If something doesn't fit your specific situation, there's no option for it, and no open text field to fill yourself, just leave it unanswered.

^^^ This. That's why all the questions are optional!

If this involves the game known as "word association", why was my initial thought "bran", followed by "is the captain suffering from constipation? I have a similar look when I endure that malady, but the correlation of the similar pattern may not be due to the same underlying cause."
