As long as you accept that it's only loosely based on Tolkien's writings, I thought there was a lot to like about it. It did feel disjointed in parts, and it needed more action. I feel like they could have trimmed out a couple of episodes and still managed to tell the same story.

However, as I hinted at above, Tolkien's actual writings seem to be more of a suggestion than anything else.

I never read any of Tolkien's writings beyond the bits and pieces of history we got in Fellowship of the Rings and Two Towers, so I went in with only a basic idea of what to expect, and I really enjoyed it. It did have some issues, but nothing too serious.

I read LOTR (well, listened to the audiobook on my long daily commute many years ago) and the prose was PONDEROUS A.F.! I compared it with the original written version and I was astonished to see that Tolkien spent like a page and a half describing the bark on the side of a freakin’ tree! It was a seminal work that inspired a century of other projects of the fantasy genre, but I really wish it wasn’t written like a Shakespeare tragedy.

Conversely, the Hobbit was written as a child’s story, with tons of rhyming and alliteration (with the Dwarf names, for example). It was almost condescending and insulting to an adult’s intelligence and I very much applaud Jackson for building a beautiful world out of an otherwise manifold-lacking story. IMO, of course.

Never read the Simarillion (sp?), so I can’t speak to its quality. It sounds like several different elements in The Ring of Power were being drawn from that.

My wife and I really enjoyed it, especially Elrond and Dain. Also found the Sauron reveal very interesting.

There were some weak spots but overall very enjoyable.

Any deviations from the text were about in line with my feelings on the LOTR films.

Silmarillion :)

It's good, but also can be a bit ponderous as well. It was also what Marillion called themselves until they hit it big and management told them to drop the "Sil" unless they wanted to get the pants sued off them. LOL.

Had no idea!

This made me curious about other bands I know I've heard of over the years with Tolkien-inspired names. Found these:
...and there are a bunch more. Mostly rip-your-face-off-metal bands.

It almost sounds to me like their management people over-reacted from an "abundance of caution", unless they did, in fact, receive a C&D for the name usage. If I were them, I'd change it back!

I just realized that the move from New Zealand to the UK means that Titan probably won't be back, which is disappointing, he was awesome.

Please forgive my ignorance, but who is ‘Titan’?

Titan is the one without a sword.

I concur - wasn’t sure, so Thanks for the context.

I’m soooo looking forward to S2! Still highest on my watch-list, and overall my most anticipated!

Sorry about that, I'll admit I did it on purpose, because I curious to see if anybody else knew who he was.

I am afraid I do not make a habit of being familiar with the names of animal actors in productions. The only one I can recall is Moose, whom Lee Pace rode as Thranduil.
