The Honorable Pumpkin
By Marie Nomad
Worf is a proud warrior and a master of blades. He glared at the orange fruit that sat on the table. "What is this?" he asked. He had joined Deanna's art class because she said he would benefit from it. She had trained with him in his Mok’bara martial arts class, and he felt he should at least give this class a try.
"It's a pumpkin," Deanna said. "On Earth, people carve pumpkins as a form of art around this time of year." She gestured to the different pumpkins on the table in her art class. "It's fun, Worf. Why don't you give it a try?"
The tall Klingon warrior looked at the sharp blades on the table. They were not typical Klingon knives. Yet, it was a challenge. "I am a warrior, not an artist," he stated.
"You also love poetry, and that's a form of artistry. Think of it as a challenge in how to handle blades against a stationary opponent," Deanna suggested. She pointed to Data, who was carving another pumpkin at an enhanced android speed. He had created a geometrically accurate jack-o'-lantern with typical triangle eyes and jagged teeth.
"I have created a geometrically accurate jack-o'-lantern," Data explained.
"You can make it however you like," Deanna said.
Worf stared at the uncarved pumpkin. He had been given a challenge and could not afford to lose. "I will make a good, honorable jack-o'-lantern," he decided. He took the pumpkin and gutted it, removing its insides and cleaning it up. He grabbed a carving knife and carefully began to work on the pumpkin. Though the pumpkin was frail like many things on Earth, he controlled his strength.
Finally, he finished his own version of a jack-o'-lantern. It had the Klingon forehead ridges, making it distinct and worthy of a great Klingon. The eyes were narrow triangles, designed to show the rage that the pumpkin would hold, and the mouth was jagged in a scary sneer. "I am finished," he announced.
Data, pausing to examine Worf's work, added, "Your pumpkin reflects a cultural fusion, combining elements of Klingon physiognomy with Earth's Halloween iconography. It is a commendable blend of aesthetics."
"It's a lovely pumpkin," Deanna smiled at the work.
"Thank you. It is a magnificent carving. Thank you, Deanna, Data," Worf said, admiring his pumpkin alongside the others. It may not have been combat, but it was an enlightening activity.
