NCC -1701 (TOS).....

I think the TOS Enterprise was treated as a character ironically by other characters. She was seen as something to be prized and even fought for by Kirk and Scotty in particular and ultimately as a lady to be treated right by McCoy. Sure, that can be dismissed as those characters just being possessive or merely sentimental, but I think those feelings helped make the Enterprise feel more than just an object to many fans, IMO. I do think that since TOS (or more likely, the TOS movies), Trek hero ships have been regarded by the characters as simply vehicles to get around from point A to point B, although there have been a few moments here and there when that hasn't been the case. But I don't think we haven't seen anyone since TOS Kirk and Scotty be so in love with their ship.

Picard seem to have a lot of love for the D....

Just because it is an object doesn't mean you can't have an emotional connection to it or that it doesn't have quirks that give it a 'personality' unique to it. It's something that humans have doing since forever, humanizing our things.
And?

That doesn't make it a character.

I'd agree that certain ships feel like characters. The 1701 Enterprise, certainly. In all its various forms. But it's one of only a few. Atleast in my opinion.

The Enterprise-A never really had that feeling. And neither did the Enterprise-D. It felt too..... sterile. It certainly wasn't helped by that 24th century way of talking. I can't, off the top of my head, recall a single instance of anyone showing the Enterprise-D any real affection,
besides her last scenein the final episodeofPicard
Definitely noting compared to what Kirk and Scotty showed the 1701.

DS9 had a little bit of that feeling with the Defiant, but even then, I didn't feel much when it was Destroyed. She felt more like a very useful tool.

Voyager tried very hard to make the ship a character, but again it was limited by that sterile, 24th century, Roddenberry/Berman "perfect human" mentality.

Now the NX-01. She felt like a character to me because it was clear how important and... loved she was by the crew. When she was getting blasted to hell in season 3, I felt like I was watching a character approach death.

Discovery, dispite actually kinda being a character, never did it for me. Same could be said for the Enterprise in the Kelvin timeline. Besides Kirk, no one seems to really care about her.

But that's me.

I have no issues with the SNW version of the Enterprise, beyond the idea of it being the same ship from TOS. As its own distinct entity, like the Abramsverse version, it is pretty slick. Supposedly being the same ship as TOS? It simply doesn't fit.

To you. You keep leaving out 'to you'. Obviously, there are people posting here that feel different.
And their point of view is rooted in one of the irrational things that makes us human.
And it's just as valid as yours.

No one said otherwise.

Appreciate you acknowledging that it is irrational rather than just assuming it must be a fact of life. Humans do many things that don't make sense to me. This is one of them.

I like how you get on me for not saying "in my opinion " but those who say a ship is s character required no such caveat.

I most people here work under the assumption that folks will know what they are typing is their opinion. Having to say it with every post is a waste of keystrokes.

Picard says it best......:D
He really doesn't. He says it's a fantasy. Fair. He says it makes it more real. Fair.

It doesn't make it a character. I don't know what is hard to grasp the idea. A character has personality, moods, and can interact with other characters.
The Enterprise is a character.

Perhaps the above gif should be required at the end of all posts.
