Salem (WGN America's first scripted drama, starring Janet Montgomery)

Re: Salem (WGN America's first scripted drama, starring Janet Montgome

I gave up after 6 episodes, but I have the unseen episodes on a hard drive that I can return to whenever I feel like it.

The word I would use to describe this show is "constipated".

They wanted something as sexy and violent as Game of Thrones even though they can't get sex or violence past the censors, and it's quite sad watching them try.

I'm definitely giving season 1 a pass and will need to reconsider even trying season 2. :vulcan:

Just because my fav actress ( see my name :bolian: ) was in them, she couldn't keep me watching either "The Black Donellys" or "Mercy" after a couple eps. :brickwall:

I'm shocked. There's a two-page thread devoted to this show on Trek BBS and no one has mentioned that it's co-created by Brannon Braga. You guys are slipping.

If he was beloved as a genius, it would be a selling point worth mentioning.

Yeah, but with people criticizing the show in this thread, I'm surprised no one is trying to blame him. Come on, this very forum has people who to this day are trying to blame Braga for the lack of quality in Insurrection and Nemesis despite the fact he had nothing to do with those movies. And now, a show created by him which he is the executive producer of, and nothing from the peanut gallery?

No one around here actually knows what Brannon Braga is or isn't involved in, do they?

Saw his name at the Salem website and didn't care one way or the other so I didn't bother to mention it.

Sorry to drag this thread back up but did anyone here follow through on this series?
I had been DVR'ing it and watching it binge style. Just started Season 3, did a 4 episode run and in my tooling about I've discovered the show isn't getting a Season 4.

If anyone did finish Season 3 does it wrap up or end on a cliffhanger? I don't have time for more episodes till Sunday night.

Counting tonight's episode there are three more episodes of the series. They knew going into this season that this would be the end of the show so it's supposed to wrap everything up.

Re: Salem (WGN America's first scripted drama, starring Janet Montgome

I was already lukewarm on the concept due to it making a mockery out of the historical injustice, torture, murder, and mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials by saying there actually were evil Satanic witches running around, but if they had elevated the concept into something interesting I would have given it more of a chance. They did not.

It's utterly vapid, sexually juvenile to attract a young male audience without having much of a point to it (Game of Thrones does this often as well, but it's at least good the rest of the time), uses wildly anachronistic language (I'm expecting modern dialogue, but not modern expressions like "I call bullshit" or "witch hunt" used in the modern metaphorical "false persecution" sense rather than the literal "hunting for witches" sense), misses the historical point by a country mile and in a rather insulting and exploitative way to the victims of this tragedy, and does nothing we haven't seen in better shows and films (including ones on the air now) to at least overcome the other complaints.

I never heard of this show until I saw the news blurb that Lucy Lawless was joining season 2

My wife found this show and has been binging it for the past week (I love her to death but she's a complete mark for some really bad "horror" TV and movies).

I watch bits and pieces when I come in from doing something else.

My lord, but it is stupid and the descendants of Cotton Mather should be able to sue.

(Nice to see Lucy Lawless though).
