It's nice to know that there was a method to their madness and not just a simple gimmick of recoloring to normal MCU standards. Although, I would have much preferred this approach in a sequel rather than using the same material over again.

Hm, if they're striving for a certain color palette to evoke a particular era in homage, as oppose to a straight color presentation, then that might be worth viewing.

One thing he says is that while he knew that the black and white presentation would be the primary one, he always had colorization in the back of his mind and set up his shots accordingly. He also half jokingly said he'd love to do a 3D version of it.

I like that it's not just a straight colorization but instead maintains the strong B-movie flavor in stylization. Still, I probably won't watch that version because I much prefer the film as black and white.
 
I still question the stated artistic inspiration of this colorization but it really made the whole production look really cheap. If nothing else, the black and white masked that to an extent.
 
Honestly, as someone who's not massively precious of the sanctity of old B&W films in general or classic horror in particular . . . I think colourising this does seem to detract from the experience. This whole thing is a deliberate pastiche of a very particular era and genre of film-making, from the costuming, cinematography, score, set design, and even the VFX shots. Removing the B&W element (or rather adding the colour element I suppose would be more accurate) takes away from that whole vibe.
Also; how are they going to handle the 'over the rainbow' transition? Are they just going to invert it so it's like 'Wizard of Oz' with the main bulk of the film in colour and the bookends in black & white? Or are they just going to pick a different needle drop?

I know I could answer all of these questions myself by just watching it . . . but I kinda don't wanna. Rather more inclined to give 'Over the Garden Wall' another look this year.

I have a vague memory of orange being a go-to colour for mid-tones in old school B&W photography, but I'm not 100% certain. I do recall they never used red or blue to portray actual red or blue since they registered much darker on monochrome film.

I'll probably take a look, but only because it's relatively short. I like that the trailer gives it a more Hammer vibe than Universal with the B&W, but do agree, what is the point?

I would guess that the point is to try to get more views on Disney+ by offering a variant version. Or else it's an attempt to appeal to those Philistines who refuse to watch anything in black-and-white.

One thing that kinda bugs me with this promo is that the over the top narration almost makes it seem like it's going to be silly parody, and it's really not.
 
I watched the colourised version last night. I'm not sure it really adds anything, apart from us getting a lot more of Elsa's cool jacket and the red/orange streaks in her hair, but by the same token I don't think it ruins the film either and I still really enjoyed it. Suspect next time I'll switch back to the B&W version.
