They liked, but didn’t love TWOK…

Interesting.

These guys, known as the Target Audience, are working their way through Star Trek from the beginning. Their only frame of reference, as avowed Star Wars fans, were dim memories of ST09.

TOS, TAS and TMP were not what they expected yet overall they really liked what they saw.

Now they discuss their watch of TWOK, and they liked it, but didn’t love it.

I found the "thing in the ear" scene with Chekov so appalling that I was unable to watch TWoK again for many years. Even now I tend to avoid TWoK unless I'm doing a "watch through" of the films. It must be my least-watched film and definitely not a favourite.

I really dislike the trend of reaction video media. I just think it's a terrible way to experience art (having to talk all the way through it and articulate yourself for an audience, not to mention the fact it makes you inevitably act a certain inauthentic way). But I do like these guys because they come across very authentically and it's obviously interesting seeing two people with no knowledge of Star Trek embark on a really long journey to watch all of it from start to finish! So many reaction YouTubers are so blatantly false in everything they do and simply try to appease their audience - it's nice to see they don't mind disappointing them.

Having said that I found some of their criticisms of TWOK a bit baffling.

I think people have taken their own opinions for granted for decades. We all know where we stand, we all know where each other stands. So I appreciate the new perspectives. Plus I know the show and the movies cold. So this is a different way to view them.

My favorite reaction videos are kids watching Carpenter’s THING…even the Goths got weirded out.

My favorite movie is "The Voyage Home", it has a wonderful level of suspense and drama, and it had light humor which resonated with the whole area of the movie being in San Francisco as the crew were fish out of water. The allegorical theme of the movie was so Star Trek in so many levels, and what I also enjoyed was there wasn't a BIG BADDIE to destroy or harm the ship. There was no tired, very cliched Star Wars-esque ship battles or none of the ticks which I have to endure in most Trek movies the TREKNOBABBLE.

These are the kind of Star Trek movies I want to see, but I sure as heck loved The Wrath of Khan, from the musical score and the outstanding performance from Ricardo Montalban makes that movie a close 2nd for me.

They've reviewed all of the first four movies. They liked all of them in different ways. They're on TNG now, going through the entirety of Star Trek in the order that it originally aired, so they'll be working their way back to TFF and TUC eventually.

Of the first four, if there was something they didn't get what the wanted from one of the films, they'd find it in the other.

^^this

Their reactions to TNG Season 1 have been a very pleasant surprise with their perspectives, which don't always meet "fan consensus".
