What happened to Star Trek Magazine

I'm probably going to let my subscription lapse now that they're releasing these collections. The short stories were the main draw for me, and the other content just isn't measuring up (granted, it's hard to see how it could; like, the art and production design stuff was a big draw for me for the big glossy 2000s magazine, but the people making the shows are putting ten times more stuff than could fit in any article at larger sizes on-line the weekend after an episode drops, and I don't know if it's economical to do the kind of narrative deep-dive into the hows and whys of making the shows in this day and age).

I mean, I love magazines, but I can't deny the sun is setting on their age.

I read the magazine via my library via Libby/Overdrive. I prefer long form stories, rather than sound bites. That's where I see magazines still shining today. It's why I'll read Vox and the Economist too. I like the longer, deep dive stories. My significant other loves reading Vanity Fair.

I'm reading the collection above, and it's good.

What I would like to see is some short stories during/between the Picard seasons, Discovery seasons, and SNW seasons. This is what I'm watching now, and while I like 90s/2000s Trek, there is a lot of ground to explore in those newer series.

And the latest issue has an interview with Mr. Krause…model maker…the 1988 Dr. Who Magazine retrospective has a bit of spacecraft models too.

Nothing yet here. (But then I am usually one of the last to get them anyway.)

But I did get a special offer in my email the other day. They are apparently having a Star Trek Day sale on subscriptions, so if I want to renew, I can use code STD23 to get 4 issues (a one-year subscription) for $39.99. I was curious how much that would save me, so I looked at my last renewal, and it was... $39.99. So I checked my initial subscription... also $39.99.

OK, I get that it's possible the renewals may have gone up since last year, and then the deal is that you can renew at last year's price. If that's the case, OK, fair. But I don't even know that, because I can't find their renewal price advertised anywhere, and if I want to see it, it looks like I have to go through the initial part of the renewal before they tell me how much it's going to cost. So I really have no idea what the "regular" price is, or how good an offer this may actually be.

I believe that's the same price they offered me via paper mail for a "early bird" renewal.

My recent early bird renewal offer was 37.99.

Since it looks like you're both American, I should probably mention that I was quoting the Canadian subscription prices. The promo code mentioned above apparently gets a one-year subscription for $24.99 for American customers, and $44.99 for international customers.

So it might actually be a better deal for you if they were originally charging around $40.

Issue 8 stories:
  • Lost and Founder, by David Mack
Odo in reflective mood, in the far future...
  • The Kellidian Kidnapping, by Keith R.A. Candido
    Tuvok to the rescue.
  • A Year To The Day I Saw Myself Die, by Michael Collins (digital supplement)
A DS9 story reflecting on events in the episode “Visionary”
  • See & Seen, by Peter Holmstrom (digital supplement)
    A Voyager story.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get back issues of the digital supplement? I only recently discovered that there's fiction in the magazine, and that there is even more in the supplement.
