DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

There's an article in Forbes online about how the last eight DCEU theatrical releases have all failed to gross $400 million, with the latest, Blue Beetle expected to end its run with about $110 million.

I haven't gone to a theatre since December 2019, and I really have no plans to break that. So you can blame me for at least one lost ticket sale for most of the DC movies released since then.

It's interesting that Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the box office is up over last years total, while The A.V. Club is running a story that if you take out Barbie and Oppenheimer then the box office is less than 2022.

I'm not surprised. Aside from "Birds of Prey" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League", I was very unsatisfied with the last eight DCEU movies.

Obviously, Zack Snyder's Justice League was one of the DCEU's jewels in the crown, but the films to follow were largely underwhelming, with the occasionally strong Black Adam and parts of The Flash being exceptions. The jury's still out on the forthcoming Aquaman 2, and one can only hope its as solid as the original entry and takes no cues from Blue Beetle. the Shazam sequel, or the Suicide Squad reboot.

@TREK_GOD_1, I've been curious from your comments, have you actually seen Blue Beetle?

Of course. I posted my comments in this thread a few pages back, but its not a full review. I was one of the few I know who was very interested in the film (when its production was announced), but it turned out to be so disappointing and misguided. Soto (or the WB suits) really tried to turn this into one of the sillier MCU films.

Have you seen the film? I ask because I've noticed a pattern with a number of members in this thread (the following not referring to you); they have a history of ranting against many DC films (Joker and Snyder's more than others), but their comments would suggest they have not watched that which they're talking about, with their pots almost parroting some of the more vocal DCEU haters on other social media platforms. The lack of a self-generated opinion calls into question why they're constantly posting about films they have not, nor intended to see.

It hardly seems fair to compare the box office before and after the pandemic -- they're two different worlds. Although Shazam! predated the pandemic, and Birds of Prey had been out for a month when they started closing theaters.

And does that chart only account for theatrical box office, or does it take streaming profits into account too? WW84 didn't break even theatrically, but it was the most-watched direct-to-streaming movie of 2020.

Though, for the full context, it needs to be remembered that we knew about COVID-19 long before the theaters closed. The stories and warnings about the new pandemic were already spreading around when BoP was released and kept a lot of people from going to movie theaters on a basis of pure personal choice.

Ah, good point.

We live in a crazy world where Aquaman performed better than the first theatrical meeting of the two most popular super heroes ever created!

But yeah, post pandemic, the world did change too much to compare all the movies. People just aren't seeing movies the way they used to, pandemic or not.

No Way Home, Top Gun, GOTG3, Avatar, Oppenheimer. F*****g Barbie.

People still come out, they difference is they need to feel it's worth it.

Nobody's saying otherwise. The point is simply that there is a difference -- as you say, the bar is higher now -- and so it can be misleading to compare pre- and post-pandemic movies without acknowledging the difference.

Yikes.

Also, it was fun, but how the hell did Aquaman make so much?

I'm wondering that myself. I mean . . . I enjoyed the movie. But I don't regard it at the same level as the first four films, "Birds of Prey" and "ZS's Justice League". Then again, my opinion of any movie shouldn't automatically reflect box office returns. Everyone has their own opinions.

You know, I just cannot see myself attending the theaters for any of these films.
