Tinman

Shannon L. Freng

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Newbie
Why was the name of 'Tinman' given to the entity known as Gumto. This can include either a behind the scenes explanation or an in-story one.

Have you ever seen or read The Wizard of Oz?
I guess the correct spelling is Gomtuu. I know you'll give me your answer, but I wanted to add that in the storyline, it seemed odd that an explanation wasn't given for Starfleet's choice of Tin Man, for their code name for Gomtuu.

How does this answer my question?

Well, I assumed your question mark after "paging Serveaux" was asking why someone was paging him, because that was the most logical assumption.

If your question was less logical, perhaps you should have elaborated beyond just posting a single question mark, for the benefit of those of us who cannot read minds.

Gomtuu needed a brain, but the Feds were calling him Tinman, before they noticed that.
The tinman in the Wizard of Oz sought a heart, not a brain. But if the Federation was unaware that he needed anything, what would give them cause to call him that, though. What this all seems to be, to me, was that a similar story was written involving this Gomtuu entity, thus intimating the tinman analogy, but they erred in initialing calling him something which was based upon something that wasn't discovered until Tam and Data went aboard Gomtuu. It's a writing discontinuity, there.

It's a codename. They don't always make sense, especially with an unknown alien life form.

I understand calling Gomtuu the tin man, due to its being lonely, but the writer fucked up, in that he had them calling him that before the fact that he was lonely, was known, is my point.

As it seems with these sites: The posters seemingly don't know much, but make unsubstantiated, inconsistent remarks, anyway. Are all these sites so awash in such apparent mental illness? That's been my experience and such as I've often heard. An acquaintance said there are too many whom only wish to provoke and engage in invective. I should have known going on here was but a fool's folly. I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of people on these sites also go to XA meetings, lots. There sure are marked similarities.

There seems this rampant belief, that all one must do, to appear sophisticated, is to merely spout tautological statements, or simply restate what has already been said, or just the bloody obvious. that is quite prevalent in XA meetings, and such.

Interesting.
