I thought it was interesting that in the road not taken future that redid "Balance of Terror," Ortegas assumes the racist asshole role of Lt. Styles from TOS (although somewhat less explicit) and gets reprimanded by Pike who (finally) tells her to shut up when she won't stop talking back and questioning his orders.

So, on some level, I think even the writers are aware of how she comes off from time to time. I always thought Ortegas is sort of similar to Hugh Laurie's Dr. House. She's someone who might not be the most pleasant person to be around, but people put up with it and respect her because of her skills. Being good at something smooths out a lot of other problems in many situations.

Kind of feel like the writers are aware of everything they write. Quips are a trek must. The bridge of the enterprise-d was stuffy af, Picard was weird about children and was rather humourless until PIC. I think that was part of Stewart's requirements for PIC, he wanted the character to be less...stuffy. A captain sets the tone for their bridge. So, Pike generally must like Ortegas' quips. We know Pike from two series, he is the kind of captain who wants people to feel comfortable. In S2 of Disco, he says 'let's try to have a little fun too' or something like that. He's a casual guy. He's got a casual bridge. As for her hair, who cares?

How in the world did I forget The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? Classic!

I really like her and the actress brings so much personality and charisma to the role. She's also one of the few characters that we don't see in TOS or the films so we don't know her fate (although, the timeline/interference stuff might become a more prominent part of the show and affect how things turn out for other characters). But the uncertainty over Erica and La'an make them so important to this show as they could go the way of Hemmer at any time. I also think she's funny and all this talk of military personnel and protocol misses the mark in my opinion. If you're in an environment in which you can literally die at any moment then I think that would have a big impact on your personality. You would probably relax more, joke and banter more because the alternative would be to become ridden with anxiety (and you would be totallt innefective then). I have no experience of the military at all but I would imagine it's probably filled with people bantering all the time.

My issue isn’t that Ortegas is a smartass. My issue is that Ortegas is only a smartass. She literally has no character development other than her quippiness. And cardboard characters like that get old after awhile.

I could never get over them all being put into the same little cell with no toilet every time they were captured, and no one having to relieve themselves the entire three days or whatever they were in there. *Magic.*

When the whole crew of The Orville got put in the cargo bay by their captors the first thing they did was designate a “pee corner”. It was one of the most satisfying TV moments I’ve ever had.

You serve in the military and you just go. Privacy is limited. Most members have a battle buddy during training to ensure you're hydrated. You learn.
