What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

The Scotty-Uhura stuff didn't make sense in 1989 and doesn't work now. It was out of left field and then never, ever mentioned again in any of the characters' final chronological appearances in the franchise.

Gene's vision at play. Space is dangerous and people die.

Controversial opinion; I don't care about the TNG crew. No emotion for them.

Sorry, but I don't think that's not a good excuse for what I thought was bad writing. I don't think Icheb's death or presence was really necessary for the Season 1 narrative of "PICARD" in the first place.

As for the Delta Quadrant setting, I might be in the minority, but the setting was more interesting before they crossed the Nekrit Expanse. After that, everyone was on par with them, technologically... or better.

Actually, that's not true.

When people want to argue that its unfair that Picard season 3 gets away with things that Discovery and other "Nu Trek" shows would get raked over the coals for, I think the primary difference is the depth of characterization where a significant chunk of the audience cares about those characters in ways that the writing for the other shows hasn't been able to establish for some.

Hmmm. Personally, I think it's a case of bias and nostalgia factor. I've been a fan of "Next Generation" for years. Yet, I didn't care for Season 3 of "PIC".

I'd never say "nobody" but yeah, it's hard to think of any fan outside the VOY community who even cared about Icheb post-2001. Manu Intiraymi's behavior on social media certainly didn't help the character. His death may have been the first time in years some Trek fans even wondered about his fate after Voyager returned home.

Controversial Opinion:

Nobody gave a fuck about the fate of Icheb until he was killed.
And even then if it had not been "graphic" then they probably still wouldn't care.

In my opinion the objection over Icheb's death was due to how he died, not that he died at all. But, now we get big long paragraphs about how Voyager feels different because of this scene, and it's diminished and ruined because this hopeful character is now dead. :wtf:

I trust that people felt the same about Rene Picard after "Family" when Generations came around, correct?

I don't know that I mind the character being killed (it's just that kind of a series) but to say nobody cared about him is silly. That's like saying nobody gave a fuck about Naomi Wildman or whoever, yet Matalas very nearly included her in PIC s3. That nobody gave a fuck about Ro or Moriarty because they haven't been mentioned since their last episode. These characters live in the minds of the fans and are yes cared about or there wouldn't be reactions to their dearths – or they wouldn't be thought to be included in the series at all. Intiraymi might be a tool (I haven't looked into it) but it's not like Shatner himself is much beloved by his own cast mates or in the end by his dearest friend. If Intiraymi is worse, still you recast the part and the character remains. What do you mean the VOY community when who else would know about the character but those who've seen the show? Even so, a first time watcher could see the impact the loss of the character had on Seven, and if they like Seven, that's enough to care as well. Nevermind just seeing a person, regardless if you know them or not, being brutally murdered for parts.

I'm still kinda mad about Rene and Robert.
Such a waste and a downer of a way to start the first TNG movie. It felt like something out of PIC more than TNG. ...the original sin(?) in a series of movies distinctly not like the series that spawned them.

There's a difference between "Oh, I care" and the outrage pouring about Icheb and his death.

Sorry, I just don't see the warm affection for the character in my time to time discussion of Voyager. But, he's dead? It's terrible!

It feels extremely convenient.

Actually, that's not true.

Actually, it is true.

Before the episode "FAIR TRADE", the races that had technology equal to or above Voyager (transporters, replicators, etc.) were the Nacene (Caretaker and his mate), Sikarians (really only because of the spatial trajector), and the Swarm species. You could make an argument for the Vidiians and their medical technology, but everything else about them was at the same level as the Kazon or others in that area.

Weapons were somewhat even with many of the adversaries. Only greater numbers gave an advantage to adversaries like the Kazon and Vidiians over Voyager.

After "FAIR TRADE", just about everyone had transporters, replicators, etc., so whatever edge they had was essentially brought down to a level playing field... really more a disadvantage, since they were outnumbered by pretty much every power they encountered.

Sir, please use better paragraphing. I’m not reading that.

Or if that’s your version of shouting or making a point, go and do it at someone else.

This is a conversation. I’d really love it if you could forgive me my coarse language in the post above and engage.

What I meant was:

Very few people cared about Icheb until he was killed off.

I’m not a dickhead, Arpy. I know we’ve had a few cross words before but it is possible to discuss without being confrontational. I don’t have a lot of arguments on this board and I don’t want to have one with you.

Sincerely.
