I can't stand her!

1. She answers back far too often - right in the middle of the bridge, not respectfully in private.

2. She has an attitude problem and doesn't know how to speak to her superiors "Know when to shut up Spock" - can you imagine any pre-2016 character saying that to a superior??

3. That goddamn haircut.

Seriously, give her a transporter accident or something, and soon!

You can probably expect some pretty strong pushback. :D

For the record, I agree with 1 and 2.
I have zero problem with her hair. I don't loathe Ortegas, but she's certainly the one I would drop (or reinvent) if given the choice.

I've not seen any of S2, but there was nothing interesting about the character for me in S1. Just felt like a generic quip dispenser.

In last weeks episode she....

Tells Spock to "know when to shut up" as she is in a huff because she can't go on an away mission. Seriously?????

I’ve been introducing my children to Trek and was glad to have new material that’s Trekkish enough to be watchable, and virtually every time Ortegas is onscreen I have to tell them that her behavior is NOT in keeping with Starfleet traditions.

How so? Chekov routinely made quips while on the Bridge.

Hell, half of Dr. McCoy's character was making funny, sometimes inappropriate, commentary towards the situations they were facing. Hell, he was downright rude to Spock on multiple occasions.

No one seemed to care.

I think she and Pike are cut from the same cloth. That may be why he puts up with her snark... that and she's the best pilot in Starfleet, weird haircut or no.

Pike does point out that he was a test pilot. So it does seem they that "pilot attitude" in common.

I think Erica is great. That she brushes up against the stiffness of Berman era characters, only makes me like her more.

Isn't she already reinvented? i think there was an ortega in tos but he was a guy and a minor-minor character. also none of the characters have really been impressive. the legacy characters are just using the names of tos characters but they have little to do with the orignal.

I dont like her spock scenes, can you image her talking to nimoy spock like she does so rudely? nimoy's spock will probably school her like he did with that rude Romulan female from TNG Unifications episode. However unlike her that had a reason to be rude, Ortega characterization is poorly thought out. I think the writers over think Ortega a lot when it comes to writing ''strong female characters'' for the gen z crowds.

Lastly I do think her hair is awful, at least with pike, his hair changes, which does not make it look awful all the time despite all the funny Pike's johnny bravo hair memes.

McCoy was the crotchety uncle type, there to keep Kirk’s jaunty swagger in check. He had age and experience and a position that allowed him to remonstrate with the captain/provide input, and a long-standing friendship with Kirk that grounded his acerbic quips in affection.
Chekov..I’m not a huge fan of his asides, but (to me) he manages to be a lot less grating than Ortegas.

(Pardon my posting errors; my 3 yr old jogged my arm and there doesn’t appear to be an Edit option.)

1. I don't see her "answering back", just making quips. Sometimes it's a tiny little bit too much, but not a problem.
2. In that exchange, Spock was speaking not as an officer, but as a person, trying to soften the blow in a human way. He still doesn't understand humanity... Again, not a problem.

3. I agree on this one. But why? Because she has hair where I can't grow any but shaves where mine grows? Or is it the look? That's on me either way. Again, not a problem.

They've done transporter accidents many times already.

I disagree, if she spoke to any of the others like that she'd be disciplined, possibly sent to the academy with the other children.

No

I suspect you've confused the fact that in the original pitch for TOS (set aboard a ship named Yorktown commanded by Robert April) there was a character named Jose Ortegas, who is believed to have become Jose Tyler in The Cage. That just means Erica Ortegas has a name which is meant to be an easter egg to the genesis of Trek, not that she's a reinvented character.
