hey, i just saw the first season in preparation for the second and I had a question. Why is there so much drama around number one being an augment in starfleet when la'an is also an augment and serving in starfleet? did she get special permission or something?

La'an is not an actual augment per se. She is an actual descendant of Khan Noonian Singh 300 years after his death. Yes his genome was modified, but it seems the Federation does not hold that against natural descendants who can trace their line back to an Augment of the Eugenics Wars.

Una is from a race of beings who openly admit they routinely modify their genetic structures in order to live in harmony with the environment of a given world, instead of altering that world's environment to suit their species. For that reason, the race and its members have not been asked, and have been openly forbidden to become members of the United Federation of Panets.

The above fact was shown in the first season episode The Ghosts of Ilyria, where it was known that a colony of Ilyrians had stated it was their intention to apply for Federation membership, but first they were going to undo all the genetic augmentation they had done to themselves to live on the colony World they were at. After that the colony disappeared, and for years the Federation has been sending teams there to find out exactly what happened or what caused their disappearance.

La'an isn't an Augment, though apparently the other kids she went to school with would mockingly call her one because of her name.
