The 25th Century

I like the symbol idea-"as long as there is an Enterprise, there is a Starfleet to defend the Federation." You may wan tto focus the first chapter of your series on that.

As you will see in my soon following character-bios, the symbol/legend-thing will be kind of an ongoing underlying theme of the whole thing. What worries me a bit is that I might not be able to write this thing in English, but must do it in German and publish it somewhere else. Being not a native speaker, I think my English is just not good enough to write the story in a way to keep up interest - I'm afraid the characters will come out flat and the descriptive parts to repititive (due to a lack of vocabulary and knowledge about idiomatic expressions).

And I think you handle English at least as well as some of the others around here. Write it in English! Think of the skill set you will develop, the vocabulary you'll have when you are done!

And here I go again, adding the first half of my new character-bios. I changes some things to make crew more diverse in general. And don't worry, the Medusan and some other interesting ones will show up in the second half later this week.

In addition, I thought of an interesting tagline for my fan-fic (to promote the whole thing a little) and came up with the following:
We used to live in paradise. Now we live in hell.
STAR TREK - THE 25TH CENTURY
Coming soon
Maybe I'm going to use that as my signature when I'm ready to kick off.

However, here is the first half of my primary crew:
  • Captain John Peter Morris, human: Starfleet vessels that bear the name Enterprise are traditionally commanded by human Captains (with the exception of Cpt. Spock, who was half-human/half-vulcan as we all know and who commanded the first Constellation-class Enterprise when she was „demoted“ to training vessel in the 2270s/80s). Following this tradition, the Joined High Command (of which Starfleet is part by now) assigned this battle-experienced officer as new commander of the Enterprise-F in hope he'll find his place among legends like Jonathan Archer, James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. Morris is 49 years old and born in Brisbane, Earth. One of his aunts is born a member of the April-family, so he kind of follows a family tradition in commanding the Enterprise. As a young cadet, he was a crewmember of the USS Savannah, that was part of a huge fleet that tried to stop the Borg during their initial attack near Qo'nos, but got destroyed. This being a key event of his life, he has a strong affinity towards the more militaristic approach Starfleet has because of its participation in the Joined High Command. He has more than enough first-hand experience in what the Borg are able to do and thinks everything that could be done to stop them, should be done – even if it means crossing the line.
  • Commander Gorna, Ferengi: He is the Enterprise's XO and not the typical Ferengi at all. As a matter of fact, the destruction of their homeworld hasn't changed the Ferengi that much. Profit is still the most important thing to them, and although they are part of the Federation now, they are very clever in finding a way to serve their own benefit best. Gorna is different. He felt that he had to give something back to the Federation and thus joined Starfleet as one of only very few Ferengi. He had a hard time being accepted as a Starfleet officer during his first assignments because of the usual bad image the Ferengi have, but made his way. Because of the problems his heritage as brought him, he really despises the Ferengian culture and does not like to be reminded that he is one. He prefers to be recognized as a „federation citizen“. Before becoming Enterprise's XO he served as an attaché to Vice Admiral Judith Hayman – in fact, he is one of her most trusted officers.
  • Dr. Elias Soong (rank: Lt./field commission), human-looking android: Being the „son“ of a legendary Starfleet officer isn't easy – even if you're coming from an android „family“. Though he had a rather good relationship to his „father“ – legendary Data – and his further „brothers“ and „sisters“, Elias Soong was eager to find his own place - and he did. A highly acclaimed exobiologist with great scientific interest in the Borg, Elias has managed not to be seen as just a carbon-copy of his „father“. Drafted by Starfleet due to a request of Captain Morris, he was given a field commission as Lieutenant (he never visited the academy) and assigned to the Enterprise as Science Officer – a job which in times of war is more about military purposes than about scientific research. As a matter of fact, Elias is not happy with his assignment and wants to be addressed as „doctor“ in preference to his newly gained military rank. His appearance is totaly human (skin colour and short, but curly hair), but he has well accepted his android ancestry – although he has taken the surname Soong to honour his human „grandfather“. Unlike Data, his quest is not to become more human, but to find the right place for his own „species“ within the galactic society.
  • Dr. Elayana (rank: Lt. Cmdr.), deltan: In Starfleet service for quite some time, Elayana became Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise after her predecessor, human Dr. Jock McKenzie resigned due to a personal conflict with the ship's new captain. The only medical officer available, Morris recruited her while she was recovering psychologically from the aftermath of a Borg raid she had survived. Even though she's struggling with healing herself because of that, being a Deltan also makes her a natural healer for others.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Helen Finch, human: A woman in her late thirties, she was born a diplomat's child on Tellar. Her parents had been on a mission in the Romulan Star Empire when the Borg-attack began. Eventually, they never returned. Finch was instead raised by some tellarite friends of her family. Because of that, she her personality has gained some very tellarite traits. She isn't easy to get along with and definitely a tough choice for a relationship. In fact she was married twice – to the same tellarite man. After her second try with her husband had failed, she resigned from her post at a shipyard and requested for a transfer to the perimeter. The transfer was granted and she became Assistant Chief Engineer on the USS Nan Bacco before she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and reassigned to the Enterprise in 2425. She recently declined a promotion to Commander (it was offered to her because she took command of the Enterprise in a battle situation and while the Captain and the XO were already dead and saved the ship), because it would have removed her from the front. Due to her assignment to the shipyards in her earlier career – which often meant building ships out of barely functioning wreck-parts – she is very creative in making things work.

Cool. One suggestion-you might step away from the Anglophone tendencies that so many people involved in Star Trek have. If your captain is Aussie maybe make Finch Brazilian or Polish or Tartar or something like that. Just a suggestion. I like the mixed bag you've put together.

You know, I tried to make Finch different by making her a quasi-tellarite because of her step-parents - her british ancestry wouldn't have mattered. But you're right, Star Trek is about diversity, so I will try to come up with a different name/ancestry for her. Part of the problem is, that the TV-shows have these anglophone tendencies as well...

I like the quasi-Tellarite thing-keep that part for sure. It will give you interesting character interactions.

Yeah, especially with having an Andorian aboard as well...

Btw, I read some of your USS Seleya-stories. Keep up the good work!

Why, thank you. Almost all of what I've written is at Hope Station-much of what I posted here is buried too far back to pull up now. Glad you liked what you read-please feel free to offer criticism-I can't improve if I don't learn!:)

Here is the second half of my character-bios. These are - especially the last three - going to be minor players, although they might get a shiny moment/storyline focussed on them someday.
  • Lt. Altoor, medusan: Medusans are very well known for their exceptional skills in space navigation – so it isn't very surprising that Lieutenant Altoor is Enterprise's Chief Navigator. Her Medusan „physiology“ being significantly different from humanoids, she isn't exactly female, but something quite similar to that. As a matter of fact, Medusans are non-corporeal beings, so you couldn't exactly tell how their „physiology“ works anyway. Seeing one can drive most humanoids mad. That was the primary reason, why there weren't any Medusans in Starfleet for quite some time – except for stints as emergency navigators on the old Galaxy-class ships. The recent invention of the so-called „Bodysuit“ changed that. Not that many Medusans took the oppurtunity – but Altoor did. She graduated at the Academy and joined regular Starfleet service. And although Starfleet is at least in part about bringing diversity together, Altoor is still the most isolated crewmember aboard Enterprise – her sight can drive people mad. But she's fine with that. Being aboard a Starship full of corporeal beings is a strange experience for her – and she surely needs her time to relax from that.
  • Colonel Laurent Jaroumé, human: Born in a martian colony, he is still very proud of his original african ancestry. His impressive physical appearance (he's 2.12 metres high and has a massive, but well-trained body) is a helpful feature in dealing with the Klingon and Gorn Squads aboard the Enterprise. His position is Security Officer. That means, his duties lie in keeping up the ships internal security and planning/leading tactical assaults. He is the highest ranking infantry officer aboard – what ususally causes trouble between him and klingon squad leader Cmdr. Kravok.
  • Ensg. Taurien, half-vulcan/half-romulan: Her mother had been a member of the inner circle of Spock's followers on Romulus. In fact, she once admitted to Taurien that she did have a serious crush on the famous ambassador. Of course, that was a one-sided matter. Still, Tauriens mother managed to marry a vulcan man. After her last-minute-evacuation from Romulus, she decided, as other followers of Ambassador Spock did, to settle down on Vulcan. There, she married her husband Saurok and some time later Taurien was born. Taurien's mother never recovered from the events during the last days on Romulus and eventually went insane. Due to that, her Vulcan father tried to bring her up following vulcan principles. But witnessing the mental decline of her mother made Taurien a rather imbalanced child herself, and so she refused to accept a vulcan education. Admitting his failure, her father accepted her request for joining Starfleet. Taurien is fresh out of the Academy, and the Enterprise is her first assignment. She is acting as Chief of Operations aboard, which is highly unusual for a freshman on such an important ship, but lately Starfleet just hadn't got that much of a choice.
  • Lt. Thardis, andorian: The Chief Tactical Officer's responisbilities lie in the defense systems of the ship only. He has no command authority over the infantry units aboard. The officer assigned to this post aboard the Enterprise, andorian Lieutenant Thardis is a rather short person. He usually gets into quarrels with Lt. Cmdr. Finch, who was raised on Tellar, and thus both continue the traditional fight between Andorians and Tellarites on a verbal level. Still, both have great respect for each other. Also being one of the younger officers aboard, Thardis takes much care of the inexperienced Taurien and helps her out if necessary.
  • Commander Kravok, klingon: Leader of the klingon infantry squad (The „Ground Combat Group“) aboard the Enterprise. He is mostly what you expect of a klingon. He does not like to be ordered around and he does not like to be assigned to a Starfleet vessel. Usually questions the authority of Colonel Jaroumé as Chief of Security and likes to alter plans while in battle to do things the klingon way. Still, he has proven to be a capable warrior, and his men follow him blindly.
  • Commander Sage, gorn: Squad leader of the newly assigned tactical assault team aboard the Enterprise commonly known as the „Gorn Troopers“. Because the Gorn Confederation finally decided to participate in the Joined High Command, it was decided to bring Gorn infantry aboard the ships patrolling the defense perimeter. Well known for their natural strength – in fact the Gorn are one of the strongest known species of the Alpha Quadrant – and due to their reptilian heritage more difficult to assimilate by the Borg, they were thought to enforce the infantry units already aboard. Their commander aboard Enterprise, Sage, is not a woman of many words and so it is difficult to find out what she truly thinks about the orders she is given – but she usually follows them – and she can put up a hell of fight even in the most severe situations.
  • Transporter Chief Schultz, human: Finally – speaking of diversity in general – a german character (though only in a very very small role). He is the transport chief, so he's got the coolest job aboard – what more do I need to say about him?

Cool characters. Very interesting diversity. Sounds like your Rom/Vulc is going to have issues. It might pay to explore WHY StarFleet is forced to put a newbie in such a position of responsibility. Can't wait for the first story!

I'm currently working on it, but I won't give much away right now. Just that this is going to be an arc-heavy thing and will focus on the characters (ok, there will be some action, too. Can't wait to put the Gorn into a fight...) - but that's what all writers say, isn't it?
