Paramount apparently still doesn't get it...

Should I buy you this T-Shirt?

That is awesome!!! I would wear that.

A tv franchise will never be an all you can eat buffet. If CBS' annual budget for all Trek related content would exceed 1 billion $ i would certainly agree. Just produce as much content as possible, something will stick for everyone. Star Trek isn’t equipped with an unlimited budget though. As it looks right now, CBS has to deal with budget cuts, which will have an impact on the franchise. Overarching variety without focus on quality entertainment serves no one..

Canceling a show makes room for new ideas, thats why shows get canceled every year. It’s a part of entertainment reality.

We can’t have all the Trek we want, this implies that artistic change necessarily must result in the cancellation of the programs which resonate with the least amount of people. I am honestly sorry for everyone who „loses“ a favorite show to cancelation.

I have been vocal in the past of my issues with DISCO. It's possibly my least favorite series in the franchise. But I would never say 'get rid of it to make room for another show'. Firstly, because there are things about it I like a lot. Second, and most importantly, it may not be favorite, but I know it's the favorite of other people. Why would I wish to deprive someone else of what they enjoy just because I am not the biggest fan? By that logic, it would make it okay for the reverse to happen... a favorite show of mine that many don't like goes for something else. That's just not right.

Live a simpler way... enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. FAR less headaches, anger, stress, etc... and frankly, it's a less mean way to be.

Not to mention a real life practical thing—these shows employ hundreds of people directly and support thousands indirectly. Why would anyone deliberately want to disrupt that?

The reality is that a show will last as long as it is a good return on investment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Discovery lasted as long as it did because it was seen as a good return on investment. High dollar show lasting 5 seasons in the streaming environment is a pretty solid showing.
And it seems with streaming what drives everything is not like the old days where shows needed to sell ads for networks, which would probably favor more established programs. Now it's about bringing in new subscribers, which apparently favors brand new stuff over renewing older productions.

I don't get why people think SFA has any bearing on a Picard successor. It's fairly obviously a sequel to Discovery, albeit likely a cheaper one.

It must be fairly telling that the two newly-announced Trek projects are spin-offs of Discovery. Clearly many people haven't liked Disco, but five seasons and three spin-offs suggests it's doing something right.

I would say there's a decent chance of future 25th century projects, but I doubt Starfleet Academy has anything to do with it either way. It'll be a completely different business case.

A 25th century series is almost certainly happening. Like it or not, Picard S3 has been a huge hit among fandom and general audiences, and Paramount has almost certainly taken notice. And withoutt going into too many spoilers, the Picard finale most certainly sets up a potential spin-off. It's more a question of when will we see another 25th century show rather than if. And besides, SNW didn't come until three years after Disco S2. Granted, there was a pandemic in the way, but even putting that aside, I am not expecting any kind of follow up to Picard any earlier than 2025.

Hmm, with Starfleet Academy set to begin production in 2024, it'll likely air in 2025. And if there is indeed a Picard sequel in 25, you'd almost think they're aiming to make 2025 the start of a new chapter for the Trek franchise...

Imagine being upset a Star Trek series is successful and ensuring we get more Trek just because it hurt sensitive feelings of people who are to limited in vision to accept that their POV isn’t absolute

We could argue whether Disco was a successful show for CBS AA when it was first introduced. But we all should at least admit, that Disco S4 was not successful (at all). It ultimately lead to its cancellation. They could’ve axed SNW or even LD, but they canceled DISCO. Which btw is not my fault, i am just completely fine with them stopping the show.

I think they once claimed that each episode of Disco Season 1 had a budget of approx 8 million $ per episode, making it one of most expensive series ever.

DISCO is not a successful show, just accept it. A direct successor to a failed tv series is way more likely to fail than a follower of a successful one. Just place the Starfleet Academy show into the 23rd or 25th century. Make it an artistically and optically successor of SNW or Picard and the show could actually attract a sizable audience.

A loud minority of fans didn’t get the memo and still believes that:

- the more shows the better
- a successor to Discovery would be a good idea.

You have all right to voice this opinion, but it hasn’t anything to do with the general consensus about the best way moving forward for Trek.

I won't hold my breath on this ever happening.

And Discovery how 5 seasons. Success in the streaming world.

Unless you have empirical polling data, it’s really not possible to say that any one point of view is a majority or minority position

I provided IMDB and Rotten Tomatoe ratings for both shows. Audience ratings indicate that only very few people enjoyed Disco season 4 (compared to Picard Season 3). Also the show got canceled prematurely which is obvious since they are doing reshoots.

More than enough arguments to come to the conclusion that Discovery has failed for a majority of viewers and the studio…

You've still not been able to answer why a failed show keeps getting spinoffs greenlit.

Are Paramount execs trying to sabotage their own studio?

These spin-offs you are talking about it:

SNW: the show doesn’t have anything to do with Discovery except for the characters which got introduced first in Disco season 2. The show was specifically designed to demarcate itself from Discovery in both tone and storytelling.

Starfleet Academy has been announced. Nothing more, things can change and they will most likely change.

The Section 31 one off movie: was first announced as a full show. This idea got canceled. It is a one time thing to promote Star Trek with an Academy Awards winner.

I wish SNW had more to do with Discovery than it led on. SNW is basically continuing where Discovery left off, so I wanted to see Mary Chaffo and Lateif continue on as recurring characters in SNW. Hopefully in Season 2 we might see one or both return.
