Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

But it raises a question how Starfleet can allow such a person in the chair. It reflects badly on them.

I would imagine they would do intensive psych evals not only when applying to the academy but also when they are being considered for captaincy. He would likely have passed that. Despite what Gene wanted you to think as TNG began, humanity has and will always have baggage.

Okay so I must have missed something. In one of the episodes of this season Worf states that he's the slayer of Gowron. When did this happen? I don't remember this happening on TNG. Was it on DS9 or something?

Last handful of episodes of DS9, yes.

It really doesn't. Shaw was not meant to be on the front lines. He was on simple exploration tasks within the Federation and such. Shaw may have even been managing his trauma to a certain extent, even if not perfectly, which is the truth in mental health treatment, as there is no cure (thus far). Then he gets shoved in to a completely ridiculous situation, comes face to face with the face (pun slightly intended) of the source of the trauma. And instead of being able to command his ship his way he is countermanded at every turn. He lacked control and was backed in to a corner. How the hell could Starfleet predict all those factors?

People are way too hard on Shaw and it's odd to me, to be polite.

Highly recommend watching DS9.

Because he killed Gowron he was also, for an extremely short span of time, Chancellor of the High Council and leader of the Klingon Empire.

He declined the position and gave it to Martok

Okay thanks, I had a feeling it wasn't TNG.
Like Worf actually ever killed anyone on TNG XD.

Given how badly Wolf 359 traumatized Starfleet in general leading to its arms build up still going on 30 years after the event....

And as others mentioned, Shaw's ship got hijacked. Can't blame him for being pissed when he's tossed against something like the Shrike when he and his crew should've been exploring the pleasure planets of the pleasure planet or wherever they were going.

Probably a planet infected with the Naked Time virus, with their luck.

Also, they gave Sisko a goddamn space station.

I’ve enjoyed Season 3, but I can’t help feeling that once the dust has settled a bit and people have calmed a little, people will remember Season 1 as the best of the 3.
I agree. It perhaps suffered at the time from impossible expectations - although actually it was really well received at the time, except for "Picard is now a robot". But I think people have come to terms with that now. It's certainly the most complete and consistent story.

But I think the three seasons will make a nice complete series. The same themes are present throughout - parenthood, loss, grief, regret, and above all, trauma. I've had plenty of criticisms along the way, but it's a worthy addition to the canon.
