The USFL is back? Why?

Now here's a great league owner. He also looks like he could line up on one of the lines. Dude's not wearing pads either.

A big selling point of the XFL is hearing everything on the field. But the broadcast doesn't want any swearing to get on the air. But the swearing is constant and the mute button doesn't get pressed until after the swearing already gets on the air.

The USFL season starts up this weekend, which means they'll be on at the same time as the XFL. You think anyone will notice?

Half of an XFL game is listening to the officials talk, listening and watching the guy in the replay booth analyze stuff, player interviews on the sidelines, and split screens with the offensive coordinator calling plays. If you're lucky you get to see some football. It's a horrible presentation, I hope the USFL does a better job televising it's games than the XFL.

As a diversion I'll watch a few games of spring football, but the XFL is difficult to watch because of all the horseshit they put on your screen.

Though I am appreciating the pace of play. I think I prefer their time rules better than the NFL.

I like the way they do extra points after a TD. The USFL and XFL both do the same thing as far as extra points are concerned, and I do prefer that to the NFL's automatic kick point.

Both spring leagues are difficult to watch because of poor QB play.

Out of the eight billion people on this silly ass planet the NFL can't manage to find 32 decent starting QBs. Which means the minor leagues are in worse shape. Good QBs are hard to find, in any league.

Spring football isn't the minors. College is. A few of these guys can land on an NFL roster ever year, but they won't be game changers. Maybe Younghoe Koo can be considered a major success story, but the only reason he was even in the AAF was because the Chargers made him a scapegoat his rookie season. P.J. Walker is also a good story.

The World League/NFL Europe worked better because teams were sending their own players (Kurt Warner, Jon Kitna, Brad Johnson) to see what they could do. There was an actual investment there.

Watching the XFL and USFL games today, it's apparent how mediocre the QB and WR play are. The defense might also be substandard, but when they mess up it just makes the offense look good. The QB and WR can't hide behind anything.

Also, Josh Gordon looks like a man among boys out there. If he had a better QB, his team would be an offensive juggernaut throwing to him all the time.

They're not going to look as good, ever. These minor leagues are full of players that can't make it in the NFL. The only reason the minor leagues exist is because televised football is irresistible to some people who will watch it knowing it will never be NFL quality. I would like to point myself out as an example of that.

What makes average college QBs look great on Saturdays? Talent disparity?

My guess would be better coaching, better support staffing, and most likely a whole lot more money to pay for better coaching and better support staffing. Part of the problems with the minor leagues is the coaching and back end support and a lack of a historical organization that builds.

My prediction is that IF these minor leagues survive for some reason, the play will get better just from the organizations themselves having time to improve. However, they will always be what they are, which is a place for players to play that can't make it in the NFL. Right up front that should tell you what to expect. Half the teams in the NFL can't field a decent starting QB.

Came across a popular football channel on YouTube comparing the USFL to XFL. Says they're both pretty much the same, but that the XFL has two things to put it ahead of the USFL -- no hubs and Seattle QB Ben DiNucci. Believes that a QB people have heard of who's playing great is vital, because for the most part the QB play is mediocre and dragging both leagues down.

Though the TV numbers were better for the USFL last weekend.

I know they only care about TV and not the fans in the stands, but 45 people at a USFL game just looks really bad.

I absolutely agree. Always fun to be reminded of COVID when turning on a USFL game!
