Spoilers THE ARK (2023)

Unfortunately it's been locked on the Syfy site from episode 5 on, only accessible to people with cable subscriptions. But I think it's also on Peacock, and I've been thinking of signing up to that for a month or so, maybe when the season ends. Any idea how many episodes it has?
Yep, that's why I bailed out.

The middle of the road special FX have been a little off putting, but then again, I watch TOS with cardboard walls and analog clocks. All this said, I too, have been roped into the story. I almost gave up, but the the "reveal" happened a couple weeks ago, I decided to just see where it all ends up going.

Characters/story has improved a bit, slightly warming to it as they settle the characters down and introduce some of the mystery.
Still contend few of these character would be considered for a colony mission, volatile and emotional, no steady hands. They’d destroy the colony immediately

We are only up to episode 3.... it seems like a couple ay least have cheated to get on... and these crises have NOT been what there trained for. Also, the doctor for sure has barely had any sleep.

Regarding the cheapness of graphics... we are used to The Outpost, so it doesn't bother us too much. At least so far, they have spared up CGI aliens, which i suspect would look as bad as the creatures from The Outpost.

I think we might finish the season... but wondering if it will go beyond Season1. Any ideas/news?

i just caught up. Unfortunately, my family bailed out...even though we saw the Outpost.

I grew up on TOS Star Trek, so budget sci-fi isn't bad for me, and really doesn't feel too cheap to me.

Kinda funny how in the last epsiode, just like the same week's Quantum Leap, they had a technobabble solution that was handwaved by a character wanting the "simple" explanation. Which is fine by me -- i am not watching this because of its scientific realism.

Also realized that they have been using Serbian directors most of the season. i wonder if we will see some planets/Serbia next season (if there is a next season). Also, Strickland's assistant just feels like a convenience -- there when they need an extra body, but otherwise invisible.

I am hoping that Lane is part of a plot to keep Trust in check, and not actually the Trust fan he seems. (Although it would make him like Reece's Outpost character -- a faith follower who gets rightfully disillusioned)

Speaking of Reece.... i wonder if they will do any Outpost Easter Eggs/jokes sometime in there. As long as it doesn't distract, i think it would be fun.

One last question - how many survivors have died since they initially woke up? It kinda feels like Andromeda, where the number feels smaller or larger depending on plot.

The crew manifest was also changing because the episodes were airing out of order either side of the one where they find the commonwealth and get a full crew of thousands.

Yeesh. This show, man.

I'm finally caught up. On one hand, the show is entertaining enough. On the other hand, the science and plot are all over the place. Like I just realized Promixa B is actually supposed to be the real planet. You know, the one we Trek nerds call Alpha Centauri. The planet that's only 4 light years away. So... where are these other solar systems they keep stopping at?

The one that everyone calls Alpha Centauri, except the astronomy geeks who call it Al Rijil or Rijil Kent or something. And honestly, it's probably nearer and dearer to Lost in Space fans than Trek fans.

And seriously? Syfy stopped putting the show online for free after episode 4, so I didn't realize they inserted other star systems in between. Wow. That's even worse than Smallville putting mountains in Kansas.

There actually is a brown dwarf system, Luhman 16, that's closer to Alpha Centauri than Sol is, only a parsec away from it. But it's two parsecs away from Sol, so it isn't directly between us and Alpha Cen.

We're enjoying the show as an oddly addictive soap opera set on a spaceship that's constantly in crisis. It's basically a good, old-fashioned disaster movie in space -- that we find ourselves actually watching in real time every Wednesday night because we want to know what happens next.

Not really worried about critiquing the science.

How about critiquing the plot then? Cause these are the most inept bad guys in scifi.

I mean, this lady is a super genius who stole the company from another super genius? Not only that, she was smart enough to steal an Ark from the military plus the revolting mobs, while bringing all her furniture onboard? Uh... ok. Like I just don't feel the urgency they're trying to set up when she had time to swing by and pick up her living room set. But even putting all that aside, what was her plan exactly? To fly off with a terminal disease to a planet that no one has ever been to before? And why the hell not? The GSA can build 15 Arks but not 1 scout ship? Or a probe? And why did she only take 1 shot at Ark 1 and fly away? It's like "should we finish them, mam? Nah, one shot is probably fine, we might get bored later and need a war." And don't get me started on the Ark 3 raid. How the fuck did that make any sense? Why did Ark 15 have to bail out of that raid exactly? I mean, "no time to go check for boarding party survivors. We gotta bounce, for some reason, I guess." And I guess the people in med bay didn't commit suicide... or they did for some reason. I don't know. And I swear in some scenes they're pronouncing it "Clown-ski's disease." Which is very entertaining for me personally, but not great for the show. And how were they going to implement this forced mating protocol? No one knew about that? So the plan was just to get to the planet and be like, "oh hey, that guy over there is your husband now. Thanks, Bye." Also I love how the first episode set up the fact that these people don't know what they're doing. They're all mid-level techs. And not even 7 episodes later they've thrown that completely out the window and they're out hacking the guy who built the ship. Lol.

Not exactly the deepest of plots, is it? :rommie: There's also the fact that if she was less openly chaotic evil, she could have just bribed or communicated her way onto another Ark and potentially have more resources and/or converts available. Especially with the crews potentially asleep. Less dramatic that way, of course. :D

Oh yeah, I forgot the entire crew of Ark 1 was asleep. Why didn't she just walk onboard, take what she wanted, and then sabotage the ship?

Cause they need at least a full season, naturally. It's why the lawful evil villains tend to be more successful at times. ;) I think part of the valid storybuilding potential is when the crew might act against each other for logical reasons, even if they're not the proper reasons. We saw that with the recent mutiny on Ark 1 and and Eva has commented that she believes the ship couldn't have reached the alternate planet safely, and that's why she participated in the mutiny. She hasn't fully gotten the chance to clarify that yet, but it seems like she made the wrong choice for seemingly (at least to her) the right reasons. I'd like to hear more of that angle personally.

Early on there's talk about planets in range, or more specifically, out of range.

In range but still years away.

They had a fast as light engine.

So that's 5 years from earth to the closest Star that may or may not have a planet.

They upgraded to a faster than light engine, but they didn't really explain how much faster than light it was, but years worth of travel was honed down to months or weeks.
