The Terry Matalas as Star Trek Showrunner Petition

Jammer's Review Site is dominated by TNG/DS9 '90s Trekkies in the Comments Section. By and large, they don't think much of any Trek before or after is very good. I lurk there, and it's been interesting to see what THEY think of PIC Season 3.

Many of the Youtubers, close to Terry, who were given the first 10 episodes early by Terry have revealed that Kurtzman had no creative input or even awareness of what Terry was doing.

Kurtzman just stepped off to give his full attention to "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and Matalas was given full creative freedom; Kurtzman's best call in the past 6 years.

That is not how television production works. Kurtzman as the current Head of the Star Trek Brand would have absolutely have been privy to any and all aspects of the BTS production from budget reports to seeing dailies and final edits of episodes. Alex Kurtzman has an overall production deal with Paramount, which means he runs Star Trek, but is also now responsible for producing non Trek content. It should be obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense that Kurtzman let's his showrunners make the shows they want to make and supports them in doing so. This notion that Terry somehow pulled a fast one on a distracted Alex Kurtzman is downright idiotic.

It's not uncommon for producers to work on several projects at once (look at Jerry Bruckheimer and Shonda Rhimes).

This does not mean for a moment that Alex Kurtzman has no idea what's happening with Trek.

People quickly forgot Coto wrote Similitude, one of the most morally hideous and badly written episodes in the history of Trek, salamanders and ways of the warrior excepted.

Enterprise's answer to "Tuvix."

Alex is basically the Kevin on the Star Trek universe. Which would make Terry like the Jac - the showrunner who still has a boss above him to spotcheck things he doesn't like.

Nor is it possible to readily replicate this season, which depends very heavily on bringing back a full cast from a prior show. This was only really possible as a throwaway season - as the third and last in the series, it didn't need mainstream appeal. It'd fast lose its novelty if it was continued with the TNG cast, and the other series are nowhere near as popular or marketable (since the fanbase was divided long before Disco came along).
To be fair, it doesn't seem like most people thought they'd recreated this season going forward by bringing back the full TNG crew. However, following the Titan crew, possibly with Jack, in the 25th Century seems doable. I'd watch that show gladly!

That's according to your own limited perspective. RMB, Popcast, Cullen, Critical Drinker and the others were given the episodes way in advance and were actually informed about all of this.
There's a difference here.

Terry letting them watch the first 10 episodes in advance was using them for free marketing. Yes, there's a logic to that.

However, Terry dishing on internal matters like that would be professional suicide. Not going to happen with a bunch of YouTubers. Terry has nothing to gain by doing that.

I mean, wouldn't he inspire people to sign his petition?

Well, you have:
  1. The NeverTrekkers, the people like Doomcock that oppose any new Star Trek that has Kurtzman involved, no matter the extent;
  2. The anti-NuTrek people, that almost always oppose DISCOVERY and PICARD season 1 (but sometimes make various accomodations for SNW, STLD, or PRODIGY) but do like TerryTrek;
  3. The pro-Kurtzman people that like at least two of DISCOVERY, PICARD season 1, or SNW, and like PICARD season 3 to varying levels;
  4. The anti-anti-NuTrek people that oppose PICARD season 3, because the anti-NuTrek people like it or because it is too close to Berman-era
I'm in Group 5. I like what I like and dislike what I dislike. Doesn't fit into any predefined category.

That's where I am as well. I have, generally, enjoyed this season. It has had some good moments for sure and I credit those to Terry Matalas. I think there's some sincere flaws too. I also credit those to Terry Matalas. Terry can do wrong and that’s okay. But let’s not claim him to be the savior of Star Trek. He’s done good for Trek but the idea it’s perfect for all is not a truism. Also, there is too much "This is amazing and more should happen because X sucks." I just can’t with that.
Well said! I too have enjoyed this season. But perfect it is not.

Well, if they hold DS9 up on a pedestal, I'm with them on that! :techman:

But there's certainly be tons of great Trek both before and after that timeframe.
