Post Your Desktop 2021 - Winter Edition

Finally decided to change from the Stargate Atlantis theme to a Czechoslovakian wolfdog used in two recent Insomnium music videos (yes, one video is B&W).

[ fights urge to yell "puppers!" ]

Nothing fancy, just a ringed planet with visible cities.
I love wallpapers like that. Ringed planets are my favorite.

Here's my current wallpaper setup:

Ring planets are the best.. When I get my Q powers I am putting a ring around the Earth. Earth should have had a ring.

Saturn has rings so if Earth got rings they could get engaged.

Hmm, I can't see the pics I posted before, so hope this works.

I still have the rotating wallpapers, On the right, Mt Fuji.

On the left... some of you may have seen the Aust film Sirens. Stars Sam Neill, Elle McPherson, Hugh Grant and Portia de Rossi, based on the lifer well-known/notorious artist (writer, painter, sculptor) Norman Lindsay. This is one of his. I've always liked his women, forthright, direct and bold. Suitable for here? Let's talk about Michaelangelo first.

For the last few weeks my wallpaper has been a screenshot of one of my favourite views from Oblivion. Standing at Chorrol south gate facing The Oak and Crosier. The window lighting effects are added by the mod Illumination Within.

The Google overlords are capricious. If they’re going to have a problem with a paper mache rock, they could have a problem with that too, fine art or no. Unfortunately we have to err on the side of caution. Sorry.

I've been tweaking my desktop for better translucency on the dock, because I use KDE and create the dock out of a panel at the bottom, it's not quite as flexible. Still, with some nipping, tucking, tweaking, and cajoling, I managed to get some better translucency. I hope it shows up in the screenshot below.

Ha, I guessed right that it's Fedora although I was sure it was Gnome due to the dock - probably much easier to do in Gnome than in KDE.
I got a new computer recently and finally got around to setting it up last weekend. My old computer was 11 years old. I also made a huge jump in OSes from Ubuntu 18.04 to 23.04. Nothing spectacular to see here, just the new Unity desktop with one of the standard wallpapers (it's a lobster on the moon because the OS is called Lunar Lobster). I think the new version of Unity is quite pretty.

That's the 23.04 wallpaper? Awesome! I love purple, and so that's just a good looking desktop!

The newly maintained Unity flavor looks like a lot of fun. I remember when people were griping about it back when it was standard for Ubuntu, but I liked it. The new distro is supposed to be building on Unity, making it competitive with Gnome 44.

Also, yes, I'm on Fedora KDE. I love Gnome's simplicity, but KDE lets me tinker. That said, yeah, a dock is easier on Gnome because all you need is Dash to Dock. On KDE, you have to create a dock from the default panels because Latte Dock, my favorite dock, is no longer being maintained, and as of KDE 5.27.4, is pretty much broken.

The KDE devs say they're going to keep working on making it possible to create your own dock in KDE, and I look forward to that, though I also feel that KDE's already complex enough to where that might present some issues.

Ah well, anyway, great looking wallpaper! I hope you enjoy Ubuntu Lunar Lobster!

It's one of the official ones that come with the release. The standard one is a star constellation of a lobster and the standard one for Ubuntu Unity was a stylized white lobster on a violet background. But I liked this colour scheme more. The classic Ubuntu colours.

We'll see about that. There are some real hurdles ahead like porting the whole thing to Wayland and maintaining compiz. The whole thing is basically maintained by just one guy. And when I say guy I mean a 13 year old boy from Bangalore. But no matter how long it'll last it is nice to have this make-over I didn't think I'd ever see.

In fairness to that guy, I don't like working with Wayland, either. Even on Fedora I use X11 because my screenshot program, and half a dozen other programs I use, won't play well with Wayland. I know it's supposed to be the future, but I'm working in the present. :P
