SFX Magazine (Via TrekMovie): Kurtzman discusses potential for miniseries/event-length projects

Alex Kurtzman's been interviewed in the latest issue of SFX Magazine. TrekMovie has collected excerpts from that interview concerning Kurtzman's apparent interest in doing shorter-length Star Trek fare centering on specific characters.

By the way, even individual characters – I think we could absolutely continue to tell stories about individual characters that are set up on the show in other contexts. That’s the beauty of having a universe now is that, in a perfect world, we’re not just doing seasons of television, we’re doing event series, we’re doing single events that could be two, three hours long. I think that we are now at a place where that’s really possible.

I don't want to pilfer everything TrekMovie quoted from the guy, but that's one of only three cases, and by far the lengthiest among them. So yeah, go check the article for more - but it's also worth noting he reiterates Section 31's still a thing and adds we'll hear more about what's in store for the Star Trek Universe quite soon.

First Contact Day is feeling likelier and likelier for a slew of info, some of which (like Strange New Worlds scoring a third season) is clearly overdue.

I have long been against a Section 31 series. For many reasons. One being that I dislike most of Discovery and especially the mirror emperor character.

Call me a trek purist, but I also do not want to see an anti-hero Star Trek show. A series about a shadowy organization feels wrong for Star Trek. Ok for a storyline or season long arc but not a multi year main premise.

Never understood the love affair with Section 31. I quite often here about fans pushing for a Bashir storyline with him being in Section 31. Which always confuses me because he *hated* the very idea of Section 31 let alone being part of it. And portraying a kinder , more ethical Section 31 wouldn't work either. Defeats the purpose of the edgier storylines they would try to manifest. Might as well do a show about Starfleet Intelligence at that point

Now having said all of the above, I would be fine with a Section 31 streaming movie or limited series.

Maybe they should take the animation assets from Lower Decks, whenever that ends, and use them to make a Romulan War cartoon featuring the Enterprise cast as the voice actors.
I've been wanting a Romulan War cartoon for nearly 15 years. That's one of the few Undeveloped eras of the Star Trek Universe I would love to see. Even if Enterprise went the full seven seasons. their seventh season which would've seen a) only two years of the Four year romulan War but also b) It would've been impacted by the 2007-2008 writer's strike so it would've been cut short.

Sorry, but Trekmovie is fast becoming the next Giant Freaking Robot. I read the entire article, and it’s nothing more than speculation and taking the producers’ quotes out of context.

As someone said above, until CBS makes an official statement about a new show or movie, I will treat these ‘interviews’ as rumormongering BS.

Next week's mystery guest will turn out to be Kate Mulgrew.

This is nonsense. These quotes are from an actual interview. They have not been taken out of context. Some of the gloomy doomy guys around here thought Trek was dead after the announcement of Discovery's cancellation. It is not. We will get new content, besides Strange New Worlds and the cartoons.

Ouch. Disputing contextual quotation is one thing, but GFR is about a dozen times worse than that!

Would you care to explain how the quotes are taken out of context? I'd appreciate it.

Good- more opportunity to cover more characters, timelines and areas of the franchise

TrekMovie does great reporting and if anything shows a lot of restraint with their speculation, undoubtedly the best trek news site, and very even handed about everything, unlike, say, Giant Freakin' Comic Book Guy.

Based on their weekly podcast, they have more info than they're letting on.

Granted, I realize I was a bit too harsh comparing them to GFR. All I’m saying is that I tend not to believe websites that claim to have inside information until I hear an official announcement. So far all I’m reading in that article is wishful thinking, like how Goldsman once said he would like to do an anthology show and everyone ran with it like it was actually going to happen.

I don't get this at all, though. TrekMovie isn't claiming insider information. They posted snippets from an interview, one which you say you've read (and I certainly believe you, to be clear) and you claim they took things out of context.

TrekMovie does not strike me as saying 'there is a new show in development' or that anything Kurtzman wrote here is coming to pass. Nothing has been confirmed here, nor do I get the implication that that is what is being conveyed.

People who ran with Goldsman's thing did so at their own fault of faulty reading, IMO.

Well that was vague.

Still feel Trek is slowing down for the next year or so. But I'm optimistic we will get one new live action series officially announced by Star Trek Day.

I would like the next series to either be strongly connected to a Deep Space Nine character.
Still time for one to show up on Picard, and spark some movement in that direction.

Or more so for me, Enterprise, given that's a whole other time period not revisited so far... bar the honorary name-checks, easter eggs etc.
An Idris Elba led show about the MACOs on the S.S. Franklin during the Romulan War
A Scott Bakula one showing Archer post NX-01, early days Federation
Starfleet Intelligence creating a Section 31 dept
Maybe re-establish the whole Earth Space Probe Agency being a precursor to Starfleet, if we're placing the NX-01 launch as the beginning of the latter.
Some show that's a combination of all these things.

" Putting these pieces together, it’s possible the Michelle Yeoh Section 31 project is one of those individual character stories Kurtzman thinks could work as a more limited “event” series or movie for Paramount+. This would certainly be easier to work into her schedule, which is likely to get a lot busier since her Academy Award win. But the door also sounds open for more of these kinds of projects. Kurtzman has also talked about a Starfleet Academy series, so there is still potential for more ongoing shows as well."

Its like they read my mind. It also dovetails with what GFR put out on the Dominion War series.

I wonder how the viewership is going for Picard? I still want the rumored Star Trek Legacy that Matales and others have been hinting at more than a Section 31 or Academy show. A show led with Shaw, 7, and Raffi. It also has Jack and the LaForge daughters. Then TNG, DS9, and Voyager characters appear. That is my dream new show.

Section 31 has my interest but only if it has Michelle Y. At best that would be a mini series, which I am ok with it.

Since it is Trek I would watch an academy show. I am just afraid they are going to make it a Grey's Academy like show with a lot of sex.
