DAE Feel like the OG 2009 Teaser promised a different film?

I get chills when I watch the first teaser:

JJ Abrams is phenomenal for helping shape an evocative feeling in short cuts, but lacks formal substance. Consider - this teaser sets the cinematographic and aesthetic stage for a futuristic humanity grounded in aesthetic realism, and uses JFK’s speech to quicken our ongoing desire to courageously discover the sublime mysteries of the terrifying cosmic unknown (okay so the welding is wrong but whatever). This animates the question - “What is out there and who are we in the face of what we discover.” What a bold trek to take!

And then the movie is released and while it’s competently shot, it’s a stylized action adventure that’s arguably… conceptually light even for contemporary Hollywood standards. Consider all of what Star Trek can and has represented. It was often intimately staged with deeply human experiences, but the characters existed in the schema of something much larger than themselves; the journeys were from fantastic explorations within and without.

So maybe 2009 wasn’t the grounded science fiction Star Trek I thought it was going to be. I’d hoped the follow-ups would find this depth, even if it would be a very different teased aesthetic. But this never materialized in JJ’s vision. And I’m honestly kind of sad.

Anyone else feel this, or have opposing thoughts to share?

Thanks for reading!

OK, this is the first time I saw this trailer. Now that I think about it I don't remember ever seeing any of the 2009 trailers. I was in college and wasn't watching TV. I think I came home and saw the movie with my parents. It's definitely a different feel. I still like it. And the movie.

I don't know.

This teaser ran in January 2008 -- not even half of principal filming (7 November 2007 - 27 March 2008) had been completed at that point, so the teaser might easily have been shot before filming of any scenes began. The words "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" promised A movie, the narration said it would be Star Trek, and the sound of Nimoy's voice near the end hinted he'd be in it.

But I didn't get the sense that it was making any more specific promises about the movie than that -- only that there would be one, and that you'd find out more later on. Maybe some of this "construction" footage was originally meant to be seen, and all of it was eventually discarded in favor of one brief long-distance shot of Kirk on the motorcycle outside the shipyard.

Or maybe it was only meant to be a teaser -- an appetizer -- and never any kind of preview.

EDIT:
Here's the thread from back then:

I remember thinking the nacelles had been cheated closer together to fit into the frame of the final shot, but, nope, that was how close they were on the real model. If I could change one thing... I mean, it looks like the ship is constantly shrugging its shoulders.

I remember it! I don't remember where I first saw it, but I remember being stoked.

The core themes of the movie are death, loss, grief and rebirth... I really wouldn't say it's light. It has more dramatic heft than most of the TOS movies and (for sure) ALL of the TNG movies.

I think it's an absolutely fabulous film.

I didn't know it was about time travel until I watched the film so it was a bit different than I was expecting.
