Video about Section 31

OK I have always been somewhat a fan of the idea but now after watching it I am ever so slightly, slightly tilting off in the other direction just a little bit, just a teeny tiny little bit.

I still think a show exploring this would be good if it was done right and they had good writers people behind the scenes to craft a good show. I like this channel and he covers a shit ton of different topics.

Could you summarize those 40 min?

I can

Basically Steve asked the question should the Federation have or need a Section 31 and he covers both sides of the argument pretty well, that to have a society like the Federation on Earth and such that there has to be some kind of organization that keeps the status quo and makes sure that the Federation keeps on trekking by doing the dirty work behind the scenes to keep it going.

In other words to keep Earth the way it is and the core of the Federation people have to do the dirty work behind the scenes, the intelligence gathering, the spy stuff and so on that people don't want to talk about outside of the public eye, and away from scrutiny so that life carries on as normal and that peace is maintained. That's the takeaway I got from the video.

I'm still in favour of a show like this but am a bit more cautious about how it might be portrayed.

I don't think we need a whole series focused on Section 31. Let them continue to exist in the shadows.

I don't like how Section 31 has been depicted (almost always) as villainous, evil, or insidious. Shades of gray range from nearly white to almost completely black. Section 31 depictions can't seem to get out of the nearly black end.

Plus Section 31 seems to be portrayed as not all that good at their job. They have to constantly recruit our heroes and, with their own special deltas, seem to be the worst kept secret service in the galaxy.

A security organization that claims to act in the name of the state but which operates without accountability to the state, without the state's knowledge or consent, is inherently a threat to democratic rule, and is therefore inherently evil.

If you want a story about an intelligence service where there is the possibility for moral ambiguity, then you should want stories about Starfleet Intelligence. Starfleet Intelligence, like any intelligence service, has to make decisions about how to act to protect the state with limited resources and unclear information, so there will necessarily be times when the morality of its actions are debatable or unclear. But Starfleet Intelligence is answerable to the democratically-elected Federation President and Federation Council -- which Section 31 isn't.

You could make them interesting—like Babylon 5’s Bester
Think of "Alias" the TV show.
But instead of having the protagonist thinking they are working for a off-shoot of the FBI known as SD-6, the protagonists can "Knowingly" work for S31 (Section 31), doing spycraft work on behalf of protecting the UFP.

Traveling around the Universe and sometimes hidden within StarFleet, doing work on S31's behalf.

Actually Sydney was tricked into thinking SD6 was part of the CIA. That's how they hooked her.

I know, I watched the entire series at least twice and have it on DVD.

That being said, the base premise for a S31 show would be different.

No trickery, just promises of doing good to protect the UFP, even if by " Not so 'Nice & Friendly' " means.

I'm up for it if the protagonist eventually realizes Section 31 is irredeemably corrupt and sets out to bring it down.

I'm up for that too. I think Section 31 has a lot of potential if people are willing to think outside the box with it.
