With the writers' tendency to go for the cliche and obvious (Jack Crusher being Picard's love child), and the fact that everything Riker did got the Titan straight into this mess, I'm coming around to the previously insane (to me) theory that Riker is a changeling.
New Trek's not the type that's going to be able to resist the "beloved character is a changeling" gimmick once they've decided on changelings as the villains.
The only wrench in this theory is the trailer (can't find it now) of a still to be aired scene of Troi chewing out Riker for running half a galaxy away the moment Jean-Luc called, seemingly confirming the hint of marital problems in the season premiere. However, this trailer might've aired this scene out of context to seemingly disprove the "Riker is a changeling theory" they knew would start running rampant. I suspect the real Riker did get a call from Jean-Luc, did indeed run half a galaxy away from Nepenthe to Earth to meet him, and at that point was intercepted by a changeling and replaced before meeting Picard at Guinan's bar. Troi's chewing Riker out after rescuing him from changeling jail, not after Riker's facing court martial for actions on the Titan.
Worf: Which one?RAFFI: "Don't you have a son? Where...where is he now?"
Also, if Jack is supposed to be in his early twenties, then hasn't Picard just been moping around on his vineyard for most of that time, and not off hopping around the galaxy being a hero, and making enemies?
He'd quit Starfleet and settled down at home, probably the ideal time for him to be a father.
They pretty much already did that when Picard explained his family history in PICARD Season 2. That ship has sailed.I know the idea that Picard is French was always a bit tenuous since he was being played by one of the most British men to ever exist, but Beverley explaining the similar accent as Jack attending school in London kinda annoyed me. Are we just retconning Picard to actually be British now?
You don't think Picard would have a target on his back? The same Picard that had two former Tal Shiar agents as bodyguards when the show opened and weapons hidden all over his living room? And don't forget the security system that went off on Soji showed up at his place.Beverly's explanation needed to be GOOD. And it wasn't. That was a very weak excuse. Totally out of character. Picard has a target on his back? Please. Picard is the captain least likely to have anyone come after him ever. He's relatively chill. Unlike Kirk.
Probably my biggest miss so far.
All that proves is that there probably are fewer safer places to be than Chateau Picard for Jack to live. Certainly not the Eleos. You don't think Picard would have a target on his back? Putting this out just to say it, I don't know if you already know this so I'll say it anyway: I don't think you're one of those people. Otherwise, I wouldn't have stuck up for you earlier.I also don't particularly care for the whole "hate watching" thing. Hate watching is what those peple whoe complain about Disco having brown and queer people do. And, frankly, I find the insuation that I'm like them to be annoying at best. Offensive and insuliting at worst.
Fair enough. I don't watch Lower Decks, even though I'm paying for Paramount+ but I do like SNW and enjoy Prodigy. So we have that common ground it seems. As to why I'm still watching. Well, I still really enjoy SNW, LD, and Prodigy. So I'm paying for P+, may as well get my $ out of it. And it's not like 10 hours out of every 12-18 month period is a huge time investment.
Agreed.Putting this out just to say it: I don't think you're one of those people. Otherwise, I wouldn't have stuck up for you earlier.
It's an interesting perspective but I suppose I see the point. To me, one show is worth the money so I don't feel any need to watch more than my personal interest. And my time is far more limited so 10 hours is an investment.Fair enough. I don't watch Lower Decks, even though I'm paying for Paramount+ but I do like SNW and enjoy Prodigy. I think Picard gets it more because he is so adamant in the first couple of seasons about being French and the French language being a sign of civilization and culture for a time on Earth. To me the Picard accent was always a non-diegetic issue, like sound effects in space. With the nonsense of the universal translator and its sometimes selective translating, he could be speaking fluid French half the time.
I mean, no one much fixates on Worf speaking English with an American accent despite being raised by Belarusian parents who speak with a Slavic accent.
It's even worse in, say, Prodigy where Rok-tahk's real voice is a deep sounding monstrous one yet the universal translator arbritrarily chose to give her a high pitched young girl's voice instead of just translating her dialogue as her genuine deep sounding monstrous voice. To me the Picard accent was always a non-diegetic issue, like sound effects in space.
