I think I'd rather just have Beverly in this plot without the whole son thing but whatever.

The whole bounty hunter and ship is over-the-top but I do like the idea of Picard vs Honey Bunny.
EDIT: ahhh, age-restricted, you know the scene anyway...

The opening music reminded me of this scene from The Expanse.

Fair - but this season has been set up as an over arching story from the get go, rather than a one off episode. There is more room to work here. In a fair comparison making the season equivalent to a one off, this episode was 6 minutes out of the full hour. There is still time to resolve the character.

Of course, absolutely agree. But for now, we only have what we have to make a judgement call, and I found the character to be the worst kind of annoying possible in this particular episode. Like, "so bad it makes my head hurt" bad. I'm just hoping this is a minor, disposable villain before we move into the meat of the story.

If perfectly isn't explained immediately it's horrible to some. If the villain is introduced in an episode and we don't immediately know her motivations or story it's horrible to some. I've seen the show runner respond to many complaints on twitter since last week with "keep watching" or "it will be explained"

A lot of people are confusing motivations for displeasure with the villain here, I think.

I don't expect to know this person's motivations or deep character issues right now. And, the lack of those details aren't (at least, in my particular case) what's making me say "this villain is shit."

It's the behaviors and characterization that is off-putting. I've honestly had more than enough of the B-grade comic book movie maniacal, cackling, inane, wild-eyed types. It's just not my thing. I don't care if we find out that it's Picard's mother re-born in a different body looking for revenge for some horrible personal tragedy or whatever. It's not the motivation that concerns me. It's the presentation and behavior.

Sybok was a cool villain with a highly questionable motivation. But he wasn't a cliche-ridden, moustache-twirling, comic book bad guy. There was charisma and thoughtfulness there.

I absolutely agree and understand that there is potentially more to come. But right now, I couldn't be any more turned off on this one than I am right now. So much so that I'm really hoping that she is just a minor hurdle to overcome in the first few episodes, and we can move on to something better.

She isn't.

Then it's going to be a long, painful ride.

Well, I found that a big step up from last week. I'd give it an 8.5.

I quite enjoyed the character interactions. The scene between Jack and Picard in the brig was great; it's nice to see Picard in control. And his later scene involving Beverly was excellent. I appreciate the more vulnerable and reflective Picard of this series as a whole, but I also like seeing him being clever and/or authoritative.

I like the grounded vibe of all ship-based scenes. That's partly due to Shaw's characterization and performance, but it's also down to camerawork and scripting. Shaw may be a real jerk, but he does cut through the larger-than-life elements of the show in a refreshing way.

Vadic is a lot of fun. She's immensely compelling, and I only hope there's a motivation to her that's as good as her performance.

I did find the cinematography and handling of color in the space scenes decidedly unpleasant. Perhaps the least attractive I've ever seen in Trek. The warm colors ran too hot, with whites blown out and blacks crushed. What was going on with that?

My greatest critique is that the first episode of a season needs to sufficiently seed a plot and source/s of curiosity for the viewer to justify why they should come back for more. We're two episodes in and for me personally there's no hook yet. This is all rote stuff. Unlike recent sci-fi like, say, Andor, there's nothing here that stands out as exceptionally distinct. To me, that's a flaw in the structure of the whole; any strong season of TV I can think of lets the viewer know what's unusual and interesting about it in the first 50 odd minutes. Even an ongoing story has to do this. This has not.

But this is still quite a step up, with some good scripting and some elements I found surprisingly engaging, and I'm certainly interested to see more, hoping there is more to see. I continue to be cautiously optimistic.

Fair enough, and understood. I guess we will see what comes out this season.

I want to believe!
Personally, I don't care for the idea that Ben's baseball got from Kira's desk to a stinky little Ferengi scumbag, soon to be lost forever when his place gets ransacked by other scumbags. I know there's twenty years between appearances of it, but still... :)

It's quite possible that is a Ferengi knockoff.
Wouldn't put it past Quark to have snuck into Ops and 'borrowed' the original for a bit to replicate it and sell multiples as the original.
(at a considerable markup)
Who'd know.

I see Sneed as more of a Kivas Fajo type. He just collects artifacts with vintage pedigree and one of them happens to be an old Earth baseball.

I'm getting the impression there is someone else pulling Vadic's strings. This all seems a little drastic for just a run-of-the-mill criminal with a bounty.

Could this be a grand intricate manipulation by Moriarty?

There is small universe and then there is small universe.
That chit is just annoying, so what.
Trek has been doing "small universe" since The Wrath of Khan.

The baseball was sitting on the desk of a backwater Ferengi black market dealer.
You don't think he'd of gone out of his way to acquire something he thinks is real.
Especially coming from a (in)famous Ferengi dealer who is known to have had access to such things.

It's just a way to add interesting background details.

We kept hearing there'd be a Denise Crosby and Tasha-related element to this season. Sela is still a possibility. If Sela survived the destruction of Romulus she may be out for revenge on Picard a'la Nero and Spock Prime.

Sometimes a baseball is just a baseball.
