Here's my thing- I have more than enough adventures with this TNG crew and strangely I can watch them any time (thanks VHS technology!) But I want to see more of these new characters, specially Elnor.
Bless your heart...VHS? That's dedication.

I agree, and Rios should have been captain of the Stargazer, and that should be our "hero" ship this season. What were they thinking?

OK, I don't usually use VHS but streaming. But it worked for the joke ;)

The were thinking, "Shit, we have to film during a pandemic and have to change our initial plan. And that people like TNG characters. So maximum nostalgia!"

This is not my experience. Having seen a lot of online reactions people really like the characters. I am still seeing people saying they miss them, but not many people would be willing to say they'd rather see the new set of characters in the absence of this reunion.

Also, I'm not sure cosplay is a good measure since these new characters were mostly civilians during their time in Picard.
Yeah they were 21st century clothes. Looks like they were off the rack from Walmart. Lol

It's not just a killing off, but how it was done.

David was killed off in his second appearance in the same (film) series by a writer that co-created him. Rene and Robert were killed off after only one appearance by a co-writer that created the characters in the same (TNG/TNG film) series.

Icheb was a major re-occurring character in VGR. His death occurred "outside the lane" of VGR in a brutal, gruesome manor. Hugh was killed off because the writers were abandoning the Borg arc and didn't know what to do with him. Both spawned major backlashes the former examples did not. This can likely be explored in much further detail in episode to episode posts from 2020, Reddit, and YouTube commentary.

With the Borg revival from death process from "Mortal Coil" perhaps Hugh isn't really dead, and could make a surprise return in season 3!
Yeah, still not seeing the difference.

meh, I don’t agree.
Icheb’s death was surely sad, maybe too graphical, but it gave 7 motivation. What was the point of killing Hugh?

Chabon covered this on Instagram.

Thier victimization was a tried and true Star Trek commentary on those who lack power and influence: a subclass of peoples having a very hard time of it. Using known but not lead actors gave it some weight without changing the series itself much.

I think these were both successful uses and made me love season 1 all the more. Trek always supports the downtrodden. Now they can show a greater extent to the ugliness than TOS or TNG did. Because damn, all this stuff still happens in the world.

The scene of Riker and Picard in the bunk quarters was pretty comical. I am wondering though why they had Riker say he "pee" instead of "piss". All the Kurtzman shows seem to be in love with that word. Even Beverly's new son Saud "piss poor". So what's going on here?
In my experience, folks usually say PEE when they are kidding or joking around, whereas PISS is usually reserved for times when someone is cranky or being sarcastic in some manner.

I didn't think it was supposed to be torture. They were just harvesting Borg parts.

Did whatever-her-name-was actually seem like the type who saw the Xb’s as worthy of anything less than torture? She didn’t care. It was harvesting parts, yes, at the same time causing these individuals as less than life forms one can care for. In the end, Seven did Icheb a favor by killing him.

Lots of people say piss when they need to use the toilet. The funny thing is we never heard Piss in star trek before now it seems like every character uses it as slang. As a matter of fact all present slang in star trek now. I miss the old days when language was supposed to have changed by the future. That is actually a more accurate way to portray it since language does change as the decades progress. It's doubtful that in 380 years that slang and the English language will be exactly the same.

60s and 80s slang was used in TOS and TNG too.

And yet we still use 200-300 year old slang right now in the real world.
The pre-2005 shows and movies used slang that we'd consider centuries old.

Riker's a dad who would've likely modified his own language considering their daughter seemed to have both his adventourousness and the boisterousness of her grandmother.

Tuvok is an asshole too?

Riker wanted to bang Ro.

Was he negging her?

Sure.

Ipso facto Tuvok wanted to ride Chell rough.

It was as if a million slash fiction writers suddenly cried out in pleasure...

Language changes much more than what the Kurtzman shows are showing and again these character talk more like present day people than any other series before.
GOOD! I turned TNG and VOY off because those people did not act like people. They behaved as stilted puppets regurgitating dialog at times. Or don't treat problems in a way a person would. It's very Shakespearean. Which is fine, but Shakespeare is not known for being accurate rendition of people speaking of the day.

Study language and you'll find we use many idioms that date over 400 years. As well as swear words.

Yes, it will likely be very similar and still accessible to English speakers.

So i was rewatching the episode last night and i noticed something did they brighten it up cause it looks way different then it originally aired.
