How did he get in Starfleet???? He has trauma!!!!
Because that wasn't the intent of this season. It's meant to feel like the movies (mostly TOS), not the TV series.
That isn't even a remotely similar comparison.
Half of Starfleet has probably lost a parent or a spouse and in some cases at the same time.
