Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Well, I enjoyed the latest Kamen Rider Geat, and I'm surprised that nobody even discussed it here. I think that Geat is quite different from the previous Kamen Rider Series. Although it doesn't has mature feeling on like, unlike Kamen Rider Black Sun, but the story is quite intriguing.

It also the same as the current Super Sentai series, Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. Although it quite childish, but the story is quite unique and fresh. Compared to the previous Super Sentai series. Because for the first time, we have a working married man as one of the Ranger.

That cast reveal is not encouraging, it feels like its going to be a really annoying show just based off the costumes/general looks. I'll give it an episode or two, but I'm predicting a quick drop by me. I figured the next show would continue the weird comedy trend in sentai, which worked with Donbrothers but (in my opinion) completely failed with Zenkaiger. This cast is looking much more like a Zenkaiger type show, which I don't have much tolerance for.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

-Kaguragi Dybowski

The Big Dybowski? The sword really ties the room together, man.

We've never had a blond female Sentai member before. The closest thing was Battle Fever J's Miss America costume including a blond wig, but both wearers were black-haired. We've had a number of blond males, like Lupin Red, Kiramei Yellow, and Twokaizer.

I'm glad there are two women on the core team. We haven't had that since Kiramager.

Interesting. The team members deliver their nanori (introductions/roll call phrases) in the same distinctive, almost musical speech cadence as the Hurricanegers, whose roll call was very much in the stylized kabuki tradition that Sentai derives its roll calls and poses (and so much else) from, so I figure that cadence is part of the tradition too.

What is it with toku protagonists these days wanting to be kings? First Sougo in Kamen Rider Zi-O wanting to be king of the world, now this guy saying "I will rule over everything." It's hard for me to root for that kind of megalomania.

Two fun moments from the press conference. Murakami mentioned watching Gokaiger, and said Gokai Change, to which Tomokazu Seki, who was hosting, said "GOOOOOOOOKAIGER!" and surprised her. And Kaku, who's probably mentioned that his Sentai series he liked as a kid was Dairanger! On VHS!

Tomoyuki Shimura and Shinichiro Miki (the latter being Sieg in Den-O) are playing the villains.

They confirmed that a lot of the show will use CGI backgrounds using a technology akin to The Volume used in the Star Wars shows. They beta tested it in the Don Onitaijin fights for this

I'm a bit uneasy because I have a feeling everything's going to look like the book world from Kamen Rider Saber.

I hope they better blend the CG & suit work then.

Hmm. A lot of the cockpit designs over the years have implied that the mecha/Zords were echoing the operators' movements, but this is the first time we've seen it done with a visible waldo-style control interface, rather than implied motion-capture sensors (or an equivalent magical interface or psychic symbiosis or whatever).

I don't mind Volume-style CGI backgrounds, as long as the people and mecha in them are live-action. After Cutanner and Ricky in Zenkaiger and KijiBrother and InuBrother in Donbrothers, I've had my fill of cartoonish CGI characters.

There are plenty of IRL motion capture devices that work in real time already.

To see a throw back to the "Waldo-style" interface control seems kinda jarring.

Tokusatsu has never pretended to reflect real life. What matters is that it's a novel and visually interesting way of designing a mecha cockpit.

It's novel & visually interesting relative to recent previous designs.

Not to the overall cannon of Tokusatsu / Super Sentai.

But they don't need to, what's old becomes new again.

Yeah, it feel like a bunch of anime cosplayers, rather than the characters of a super hero series. I hope that they won't repeat the idea of using "non human" character as one of the Ranger. Not because the idea of Alien is bad. But the implementation were always ugly in Tokusatsu series. Specially when the character is female, as I prefer to enjoy watching the action of "human" females rather than "all days" full costume with mask / helmet character who claim that he/she is a woman.

It's never been done in Sentai before as far as I can tell: https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Mecha_and_Giant_Robo_Cockpits

Cool if this is a first time.

And aren't the cannons usually on the arms or the chest, not in the cockpit? ;)
::Shrugs:: There's been literally over 40+ years of Mecha, forgive me if I don't remember every single cockpit design.

And some series I've just never watched, so I do have some gaps in knowledge in the earlier years.

Random, but does anyone understand how the Thunderzords worked? I remember in their debut the rangers had to retrieve the Dinozords to create the Thunderzords. But considering we saw them transform from the Dinozords to the Thunderzords every time they were summoned, it feels like they morphing themselves and technically, if foolishly, the Dinozords could still be used if wanted.

Dialogue in "The Mutiny", parts 01 - 03 seems to be contradictory. The Dinozords are frozen in part 01 by Parantishead, even though there's no reason for them to even summon the zords, since Parantishead isn't giant and this goes against the "never escalate a battle" rule.

In part 02, Zordon states that nothing would ever give the Dinozords enough power and that they need new ones that have the power of thunder.

Towards the end of the episode, there's dialogue about how the new zords are on standby, but they can't be activated until the rangers have regained control of the old ones.

In part 03, they regain control of the Dinozords, but Zedd strips them of them of their power and sends them into the depths of the earth.

Alpha then upgrades the Dinozords into Thunderzords, despite Zordon having previously stated that it wasn't possible to give the Dinozords more power, and the Thunderzords were already said to be on standby in the previous episode.

In an earlier script, when it was just two episodes, they were going to have the original Megazord fight Parantishead first (unsuccessfully) before using the Thunder Megazord https://sirstack.livejournal.com/7361.html
