"Hell no" for me. Believe me, I love the idea of the flying car, especially the BTTF II style flying cars, but the truth is that human beings are grossly dangerous as they are in ground vehicles. Giving that vehicle the ability to shoot through the air is a recipe for absolute disaster.

Our society needs to move more towards public transit anyway. The US has a car centric culture, and all of the massive headaches that go with it. Is there freedom in having your own car? Yes, and for many a necessity since our nation is built around cars, which means a simple trip to the store, for many, requires a car because mass transit is either inadequate or outright non-existent, but there are public solutions for such things, and we need to explore them.

So no, I don't want flying cars to be a reality for everyone in the sense that we have ground cars now. There would have to be considerable restrictions, or else we're just moving our irresponsibility from the ground and into the air.

Agreed. The only way around that is to assign greater personal responsibility and restrict access; i.e. require a pilot's license. Maybe require filing a flight plan. Implement "no fly" zones.

If that sort of thing wasn't enacted upon initial rollout of your flying car, I guarantee it'd happen five minutes after the first avoidable accident or drunken joyride.

So, no. In the sense that we have ground cars now, it won't happen.

Which will of course never work. In order for cars like that to become a reality, they'd have to have a way to stop and hover in midair, and that is obviously impossible.

So when we see a flying car in BTTF or The Fifth Element do that...we know they're lying.

srsly though, that's a real problem: Flying cars can't stop (until they reach their final destination). Once you fly, you have to KEEP flying. Cars can't work like that.
