The old comic books are online

To paraphrase Guy from Galaxy Quest; Did any these artists actually watch the show?

Remember, this was the same set of record books that presented Lt. M'ress as a blue skinned humanoid. But I must admit that picture suggests the memos got crossed big time!

Makes makes it especially puzzling is that they drew the costume and bridge details fairly accurate.

Sincerely,

Bill

Actually, if you change the skin color and lose the afro, it's a pretty good George Takei likeness, so perhaps at one point it did look like Sulu.

No they did not.

The artist assigned to the old Gold Key treks--an Italian without any access to US TV shows, I believe--had never seen an episode of the series. He was given some stills of the Enterprise and the actors pictures, I think maybe a plot synopsis or two and that's about it. That's why there's rocket fire coming out of the nacelles, they use "space radios", lasers, and most of the details of the show are decidedly wrong. But hey, the Enterprise goes from galaxy to galaxy in this version!

IIRC, and I could be wrong, but wasn't the artist on some of these books Neal Adams (one of DC's great artist -- Superman, Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow). I loved these when I was four because it looked so much like the show except for the secondary characters. It may have been a rights issue and the company may have had the rights only to Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly's likeness and had to fudge the rest. In one comic, they had a green M'Ress and a blond-human Arex.

On the other hand, `Uhura' is apparently wearing skin-tight latex or PVC going up to ... ah ... well ... if you'll pardon me, I need to take a quick shower.

Considering how so much else is "on model", uniforms, sets, etc., and the generally good layouts and inking, that explanation makes the most sense!

Has anyone been to http://www.wowio.com? It's an ad-based free book website. It lets ya download books for free legally. It puts ads for the sponsors at the front and back of the books to pay for it.

Anyway, I've been looking through it, and I think it has ALL the old TOS comic books from the late 60s and early 70s. It's pretty awesome! You should check it out if you want to read them.

I just got my official password, and that's one cool site.

Much thanks for posting the link, egonbeeblebrox, What a blessing!

DC Comics needs to come up with something like this. Fee-based, of course, for the new stuff.

Joe, happy

White Uhura is HOT! Not that regular Uhura is any less so, of course, but it's amusing to notice the good qualities of the wildly inaccurate art.

I don't know what to say about black Sulu.

egonbeeblebrox... you are awesome. Great find, thanks for the heads-up.

What are the odds of finding this while my wife and daughter are out of town for 4 days? Looks like I've got quite a weekend ahead of me. :D

I just wish Checker would finish publishing the reprints. They have 2 or 3 left to complete the series. They were always a fun read.
