The Devil of the Dark is a great look at a species that is very alien looking. I also love the episode because it turns out that the Horta was only attacking the humans as they were mining their offspring. Bonus point for McCoy saying, "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" for the first time.

Going chronologically through the series leads me to choose a DSC episode. A lot of good in Season 1 but I'm going to choose Magic To Make The Sanest Man Go Mad. Feels in many ways like a TOS episode, in others a TNG episode, whilst still retaining it's own identity as a DSC episode.

Easy pickings, unlike my ex's nose:

TOS: "Space Seed"​

Early in TOS's run, the rough edges of the show being 200 vs 300 vs 900 whatever years later isn't an issue any more than the issue of genetic engineering requiring more than one biological generation to develop (show in 1966 claiming dude took over world in 1996, but even by then Khan's grampa and his friends should be impressive enough, since actual genetic manipulation wasn't "a thing" by that point either) was. What makes this story stand out are the story's themes... and the acting - especially by Ricardo Montalban as Khan.


(Ranks up there with ST6's dinner scene, but for both stories the tone was perfect.)


(No lengthy wallpaper musak score in the background either because the story knows its material and acting are actually good enough to not need artificial propping up. Then again, it does a little stock music sting at the start and end, but the bulk of the scene still lets the actors have the spotlight, where it belongs. And shines. Even detractors of Shatner's style have to concede he's excellent in this episode as well.)

LOL, there's more than a sewer's worth given all the season ones' content .

Datalore's biggest problem (IMHO) is that the script dumbs down everyone else just to prop up Wesley. It's not just being lazy scripting and risking way too much for a newly made series (it's clearly pinning more on Spiner than you'd think). The character handling in the scripting is indeed absolute shit, and is the worst possible way to build up characters, since it does the characters a disservice, the actors a disservice, the show a disservice, the audience and anyone in it a disservice, the TV stations airing it a disservice, the airwaves and/or cable lines a disservice, satellite dishes a disservice, satellite relays in space a disservice, the entire universe a disservice... I think that covers almost everything...

Indeed, the only non-villain character who comes out of this episode unscathed is Dr Crusher, who actually feels like a person for once. Maybe Worf too, since if a baddie can take out the strongest person with ease then you know it's going to hit the fan and make a biiiig mess. But Data is not excepted, despite this largely being a great Data character-building story, since they let him use a contraction at the tail end of the story and not play it fully as a joke (which they couldn't have done either) and in a story where Data is said he cannot use contractions and has an evil doppelganger who uses them incessantly... and nobody reacts as if that's Lore over there. Now that would have been a fun ending... But for this episode, it's often Lore when not Data that props up what is otherwise bad, so my ranking it this high is due to considerable praise. Spiner pulls off a lot - and doing double duty on top of that. The cons are bad, but the pros IMHO make up for it.

Frakes having to act over that outfit is impressive. The main story is indeed better than Datalore. The execution is unfortunately worse.

But it did give us some gems:

Going chronologically through the series again and it's time to eliminate a TOS episode from the incredibly strong TOS first season. I'm going for The Man Trap, the first TOS episode I ever saw in the 1990s on BBC2. Very find memories and a great way to spend 50 or so minutes.

Charlie X is one of those episodes I always really enjoy on rewatch as the mess hall scenes with Uhura singing about Spock and then Charlie always gives me the biggest grin. Also, there is nothing like an impetuous teen, who also happens to be a powerful being, putting your life in danger when you're trying to teach him life's lessons.
