What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I've yet to be silenced for my controversial opinions about Star Trek, including those shared by few (if anybody).

Such as, TAS > DS9. It's easy enough to find a DS9 episode that's better than a TAS episode (example, "Far Beyond the Stars" > "Bem," duh). But when it comes right down to it, on the average, I enjoy rewatching TAS way more than I do DS9. A few years back, I attempted a rewatch of DS9, and I made it all the way through less than 10% of the episodes; most of the time I was incredibly bored. There are easily three TAS episodes that I still enjoy (more, actually), and that's more than 10% (of the 22). So, mathematically, TAS > DS9. IMO. :techman:

This isn’t just about liking one show over the other. It’s about the fact that anything after 2005 is badly written. More so than the previous shows. The ratio isn’t good.

"New Eden" is one of the best single hours of Trek in the 21st century, easily in the Top 25 episodes and films of the 2001-2022 period. This notion that it's ALL bad because some of it is bad is just malarkey. Apologies to President Biden for stealing his catchphrase.

1. My controversial opinion had nothing to do with your controversial opinion. I was talking about my controversial opinion, which I mentioned in context only to echo that this is a space where people can post things that even almost everyone else disagrees with, without getting silenced.

2. I'm going to infer that, when you say it's badly written, you mean that you don't like the writing. So, yeah, it really kinda is about liking one thing over another.

I don't like ENT as a series. But there are episodes of ENT that I like.
Yup. I don't like TNG, but I enjoy certain episodes, Pegasus chief among them.

I don't like Voyager but Tuvok is one of the best Trek characters.

I don't like ENT but Terra Prime/Demons two parter is one of Trek's strongest outings.

And on it goes. Trek isn't good or bad.

You're speaking in absolutes. You don't actually believe this.

Enterprise had more episodes to work with. These new shows are only about 10 episodes and they can’t even give us a good story. No rewatchability to me. There is no way in hell I’d rewatch any Discovery or Picard because the arcs just aren’t interesting to me and non-sensical. It’s not just liking an episode here and there, to me the entire series is just awful. There is nothing redeeming to me about the cartoon and seems to be made by people who hate Star Trek.

Lower Decks is made by people who love Star Trek. All those deep-cut references in the show aren't something that someone who hates Star Trek would be able to pepper into the scripts. I'm not a fan of LD, by the way, but even I can see this.

You left out Strange New Worlds. You left it out because you do like it. Saying so makes you feel dirty, but you do.

I don’t appreciate your fantasies on how I feel. I’ve said before that I do like it but one halfway decent show out of four isn’t a good track record. These shows are good imitations of the Star Trek brand and nothing else.
Anyone can pepper in references. That’s nothing special to me.

If you don’t like it that’s fine.

To say it’s “made by people who hate Star Trek” is ludicrous.

There is tons of love in every episode.

References aren’t love to me. It’s just references.

Indeed. And if we can't laugh at something we love, then perhaps we need to re-evaluate our relationship with that thing.

Kor

I can laugh at Star Trek. But I don’t appreciate others laughing at it. And the cartoon is laughing at it rather than with it.

ENT is the closest you're ever gonna find to Conservative/Republican Trek. Outdated viewpoints. Racism, not as part of a character arc but as a statement. Sexism. Lack of gay characters when most shows were starting to have gay characters.

I love the third season, but it's like, trying to lean into being "edgy" and then the forth is pandering to the hardcores more than the current stuff.

How do you know that there were no gay characters on enterprise? I’ve always been amused by this.
