TOS Soundtrack?

Has there been a complete release of the TOS music? I've seen these 2-3 CD's which have the music from a couple of episodes, and I've seen some collections where they've remade the music, I'm not interested in any of that remade stuff.

If there aren't a collection available, do you think it ever will? I love the music of the show and would love to have it on CD.

 

uh.... yeah... I hate when they re-record stuff like Mozart. They should stick with his original recordings. I don't know why there are all these cover-orchestras out there.

 

Thank you, exactly my point. I have some CD's at home, like compilations of classic scores from Schwarzenegger movies, and they sound completely awful, not true to the original at all.

 

I have 3 CDs from GNP Crescendo Records that contain complete scores to a couple of episodes.

Lets see, there's "The Cage/Where No Man Has Gone Before", "The Doomsday Machine/Amok Time" and "Shore Leave/The Naked Time" on CD. I think they're complete, and definately original recordings.

There are also a couple of "Best Of Star Trek" type CDs with large chunks of "The Corbomite Maneuver", "The Trouble With Tribbles" and "Balance of Terror".

Personally, I'd like to see "Elaan of Troiyus" get a good CD release.

Yes, those are the ones I'm talking about. I'll probably pick up one or two of them at the next sci-fi con in April.

 

Different, yes. "Completely awful," perhaps in your opinion, but not mine. I recognize that there are differences, but the differences are mostly trivial to me. I have a several disks with rerecorded TOS music (Varese Sarabande and Label X) that I enjoy a great deal. Not only are they well done, but in most cases, the music is not otherwise available.

 

So you've heard those Schwarzenegger tracks?

 

The "Where No Man" score isn't quite complete. It leaves out the last several cues, including the climactic battle. It was originally released on LP and thus couldn't fit both complete scores.

 

Not that good of an analogy since, obviously, no recordings exist. They still release Rachmaninov's own performances of his work, though. And as well they should; even with the hiss and crackle there's a stern professionalism in Rachmaninov's performances I find very admirable compared to the sometimes waxing sentimentalism of more modern recordings.

And on the other hand, the rerecording I have of Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky is better than the one used in the film. Go figure...

 

I have about half a dozen of the different album releases they did back in the 80s/early 90s. They're okay, but I'd love a complete collection of the original scores.

There was a guy who -- through painstaking effort -- put together a website containing a complete collection of every piece of music scored for the series. He organized it by episode, and then created a companion document listing every episode and the music scored for it. If an episode had tracked music, he indicated from which episode(s) the music originally came.

Unfortunately, I found out about this after he pulled the site down.

That analogy also collapses the instant you substitute a recording artist or band for Mozart.
Sinatra, The Beatles, B-52s, Michelle Branch....

 

I also have most of the stuff for Trek that has been put out on CD and would love a set of TOS music. Really some great work done on that series and some fun music to listen to.

 

There are at least 20 different commercial recordings of Carmen out there. Many featuring the same singers.
A popular symphony like Beethoven's fifth has probably been recorded 100 times. And, if the artists are worth a damn, each brought something different to the work.

 

If it's not original, it's not original. I'm a purist.

 

I would love to have the "Elaan of Troyius" soundtrack on CD... the finale battle between the Enterprise and the Klingon battlecruiser was some of the best music of the series.
