The First Doctor

Out of curiosity, did John Hoyt ever comment on his role as the first ships doctor on Star Trek?
I bet he made a mean martini

Here's a brief interview with Hoyt from Starlog #113: https://archive.org/details/starlog_magazine-113/page/n33/mode/1up?view=theater

He also talks a bit about "The Cage" in Fangoria #51, which is archived here (go to page 60 for the Trek comments, and you can just close the mailing list pop-up): https://www.fangoria.com/archives/wescraven-clivebarker-hitchcock/
I assume Hoyt was joking in Fangoria when he says he's have gotten rich had he been cast in the series. I don't think DeForest Kelley ever made much off Trek until the movies came out.

He might have imagined big time residuals from syndication, which the actors weren't really getting. And also, this was 1986 so he might have meant the movies.

I imagine that he wasn't entirely serious -- as a long-time actor he probably knew how syndication residuals worked. And while I don't know how much Kelly made from the movies, I believe he continued to live fairly modestly until his death.

Although he pretty much retired from acting except in Trek productions, so he wasn't getting as much work as he might have otherwise. Maybe not the best comparison there.
